APPLETON, WI – Connor Wollersheim was coming off of an outing he’ll never forget when Appleton North beat Hortonville 1-0 in 10 innings and the Kent State commit struck out 20 in the process. Well Wollersheim picked up right where he left off on Tuesday giving the Lightning a chance to advance to the Sectional Championship. However, Brice Swick and the Kimberly Papermakers didn’t read the same script and mounted a come from behind 5-4 win in nine innings to advance.

Wollersheim looked sharp from the get go allowing just one run on three hits and striking out seven before reaching his pitch count in five innings.

North took an early lead and seemingly a handle on the game itself in the first inning with two runs. The Lightning tacked on one more in each of the fifth and sixth frames on an RBI single by Taylor Borchers and an RBI double off the bat of Kody Fiorito.

With a 4-1 lead, and six outs left the Papermakers looked like they were on the ropes. LHP Jack Harvath relieved Wollersheim in the sixth and got two quick fly outs right away. Kimberly catcher Steven Jacobson Steven Jacobsonthen got the Papermakers a tick closer with a solo blast to left.

Then in the bottom of the seventh Kimberly just would go away. A one out walk to Griffin Hawley brought the tying run to the dish in starting pitcher Brice Swick. Swick quickly deposited a 1-0 fastball over the left field fence and tied the game at 4-4.

With momentum clearly now on the side of the Papermakers, Appleton North went quietly in thBen Carewe eight and ninth while Kimberly continued to threaten. Hawley got things started again in the ninth with a leadoff double to right center. This time North decided to walk the seventh inning hero, Swick and pitch to three-hole hitter Ben Carew who had been 0-for-3 up to that point with a couple weak contact at bats. This time Carew didn’t miss and drove Harvath’s 0-1 offering to left for the game winner and a walk-off scene in Appleton.

North’s Alex Henwood finished 3-for-3 with a run scored while Kimberly’s Steven Jacobson went 2-for-4 with a home run and triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
