Lake Country Lutheran 8, Martin Luther 2

Baseball has been hard to come by this year in Wisconsin as the weather has been anything but cooperative. However, Lake Country Lutheran and Martin Luther got the chance every kid dreams of and played in the cozy confines of Miller Park on Wednesday night. With the roof closed, no inclement weather was going to affect this game.

The Lightning took down Martin Luther in a wild one, 8-2, after slamming Martin Luther with six runs in the ninth inning.

Lake Country Lutheran got on the board first scratching out a run in the third. Junior Chris Kornowski dropped down a beautiful squeeze bunt to score Jacob Budnik who singled earlier in the inning.

The Lightning would score again in the fifth by another productive out by Kornowski. After loading the bases with a pair of singles and an error, Kornowski recorded his second RBI of the game with a fielder’s choice groundout to short.

The Spartans struck back in the fifth, tying the game with two runs after working back to back walks to start of the inning. Those walks would come back to haunt starting pitcher BJ Sabol as both runners later scored after an single to left field by Micah Kurkowski.

The score stayed knotted at two until the ninth when the Lightning rallied for six runs in the inning. Only recording two hits in the inning much of the offense came via the walk coupled with Spartan errors.

Junior Jesse Turner sealed the deal for Lake Country Lutheran pitching a perfect ninth frame with two strikeouts. Turner recorded the win after pitching four innings of no-hit baseball in relief of starter BJ Sabol (2014). Turner struck out 10 of his 12 outs while only allowing one base runner via the walk.

The last time 18 strikeouts were recorded in Miller Park was in May of 2004 by Milwaukee Brewer ace Ben Sheets. Well on Wednesday two  Lightning pitchers combined to match that feat as Sabol and Turner were masterful combining  for 18 strikeouts over nine innings allowing only two hits.

Martin Luther starting pitcher Jon Blair (2014) was no too shabby himself, going eight strong innings surrendering just two runs and striking out 12. Unfortunately, the Spartan relief pitching couldn’t finish the job.

Sophomores Jacob Budnik and CJ Teske each had two hits for the Lightning. Seniors Isaiah Rivera and Micah Kurkowski recorded the only two hits for the Spartans.
