Player Spotlight: 2016 RHP Ryan Schmitt

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director – Wisconsin/Illinois

Take a look a RHP Ryan Schmitt (Arrowhead, 2016) and he doesn’t have the prototypical long lanky pitchers frame, but standing 5-foot-10, 160-pounds Schmitt brings more competitiveness and moxy to the mound than guys twice his size.

Schmitt has been on a steady upward progression all summer and most recently saw his fastball reach its peak of 89 mph earlier this fall. He was one of Team Wisconsin’s highlights at the PBR Future Games tossing two scoreless innings against some of the top 2016 prospects in the region, his fastball sat 85-87 mph touching 89 coupled with an attacking curveball.Ryan Schmitt

Schmitt again impressed at the PBR Labor Day Challenge scattering two hits over five innings against a loaded Southern Illinois squad comprised of mostly 2015 graduates.

Finally in our most recent sighting of Schmitt he carved up the Reds Scout Team this fall who is made up of the top 2015 potential pro prospects in Illinois. Schmitt went five innings of three-hit baseball, striking out five and his fastball reach 89 mph in the first inning featuring a hard 75-77 mph curveball.

Currently ranked No. 9 in Wisconsin’s 2016 class, Schmitt is clearly one of the top pitchers in the state and should not get overlooked due to his size. His fearless approach on the mound jumps off the page and is the type of arm that could step into any situation and have success right away.
