Preseason Power 25: No. 8 Green Bay Preble

The Wisconsin high school season kicks off on March 28, the first day for regular season games. Most teams will begin practicing on March 20, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups.

Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team. If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

X-FACTOR

Junior RHP Paul Stefiuk, a Bradley commit, will step into the teams pitching staff and make an impact in 2017. Stefiuk adds to an already deep staff that will look to dominate in the Fox River Classic Conference and again make a run at a state title.

STAT RAT

3: The number of starting pitchers the Hornets have returning that posted a sub-2.00 ERA in 2016. Griffin Summers (1.21), Jarrett Scheelk (1.67), and Will Conard (1.24).

OUTLOOK

The Hornets only lose one pitcher who saw significant time on the mound last season. With more arms in the pipeline the Hornets will reload one of the deepest rotations in the state. Last year they made it all the way to the Division I semifinal game before losing to eventually state champion Burlington 9-0. They again have the pieces to make a deep run in the playoffs. The rotation will be headlined by Griffin Summers (6-3, 1.21), Jarrett Scheeelk (6-2, 1.67), and Will Conard (4-0, 1.24) who all played significant roles on varsity last season and are committed to college. Look for junior Paul Stefiuk, a Bradley commit, to come in and get significant time on the mound this year. Stefiuk sees his fastball sit in the upper 80s to go along with a sharp breaking curveball. With how good the pitching is for the Hornets the offense needs to take a step forward in 2017, last year heading into the state tournament they had a .272 team average. The top returning hitter is Griffin Summers who hit .311. Talent runs deep for the Hornets as they have a few interesting freshman who could play a role in 2017. Freshman LHP Ryan Stefiuk is very advanced and has already received interest from major Division I schools, with the new pitching rules there’s a chance he could see some varsity time.
