RHP Peyton Cypress reaching new heights

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director – Wisconsin/Illinois

Peyton Cypress recently emerged at the January 12 Unsigned Senior Showcase as maybe the best available RHP in Wisconsin’s Class of 2014.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound RHP from New Berlin Eisenhower stepped to the mound and fired 85-87 mph fastballs topping out at 88, catching my eye and the rest of the 35+ colleges in attendance. Cypress’ delivery has some effort but there is a lot of explosiveness and upside there. His velocity dipped some out of the stretch but Cypress is just scratching the surface of his delivery.Peyton Cypress

Even more impressive than his fastball is his secondary stuff. He throws both his curveball and changeup with conviction and features advanced action on both. His curveball topped out at 77 mph and has late biting action with depth, a true swing and miss pitch. His changeup flashed hard arm side action with sink at 78-81 mph.

Cypress is a late bloomer who is now showing advanced action through the hitting zone with multiple pitches, he has huge projection and has the ability to be a high level prospect.

At the end of his freshman year Cypress weighed in at a staggering 5-foot-2, 96-pounds. By the end of his junior year (June 2013) he hit the 6-foot-2 mark and according to Cypress saw his fastball topping out in the low 80’s.

Cypress has never seen improvements like this in a single off-season. He said,

“This off season has been biggest off-season of my life, with improvements in my baseball career. I work out 5 days a week, two of those days I make a 1 hour 30 minute drive after school from New Berlin, Wisconsin to Mundelein, Illinois. I am in a program at Deep Impact Performance Training in Mundelein that will help me reach my goals of consistent 90+ mph pitches.”

Cypress also said,

“My velocity took a spike when my strength did this off season. I have put on 10 pounds and rose my velocity 6+ mph. Along with my great strides in physical progress, my mental toughness has also blossomed. I have devoted myself to focusing on goals set by coaches and myself to meet and exceed them. I have also become determined to become the best baseball player I can be and let that transition into making me the best man I can be.”

So far, according to Cypress he has been contacted by Ball State, Cincinnati, Nicholls State, UW-Milwaukee, Illinois State and Lewis University.

“I am looking for a coach that will help me achieve my full potential. I want to be a part of a program that allows me to earn my position based on merit and performance. Most importantly, I would also like to be a part of a team that believes in the “rope”. Everyone trusts everyone and no hatred because you would trust any one of your teammates with the end of the rope if you were hanging off a cliff.”

Cypress had yet to make a college visit but since the Unsigned Senior Showcase he has plans to make unofficial visits to Nicholls State and Ball State in the coming month.

On top of his baseball accolades Cypress is also taking care of business in the classroom.  He has been on the honor roll every year in high school and is carrying a GPA around 3.4 and scored a 26 on his ACT.

We will be keeping close tabs on the progress of Cypress, who could be the most coveted 2014 in Wisconsin right now.
