Southern Wisconsin Open: Outfield Analysis

The Southern Wisconsin Open took place on October 24th at STiKS Academy in Oconomowoc, WI. We continue our analysis of the event with the outfielders.

2017 OF Chase Davis leads the list of outfield prospects. Davis is a toolsy left-handed hitting outfielder who showcased with speed being his best tool, running the 60-yard dash at 6.81.

Michael Lepow is a solid runner with a repeatable bat that will play in games. This group of outfielders showed arms that project more on the mound, many of whom will be showcased in the pitching analysis.  Let’s take a look at the top outfield prospects.

Top Prospects

1. Chase Davis, OF, Milton, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder with a strong, athletic frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a slightly open stance. Pull hitter, stays open thru contact with a short swing path. Aggressive hitter with strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Above average runner in the 60 yard dash at 6.81. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm angle. Plays thru the ball with fluid footwork and average hands. Threw 79 mph from the outfield.

2. Michael Lepow, C/OF, Racine Case, 2018
Average build at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds. Right-handed hitting C/OF. Solid runner in the 60 running at 6.90. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a high hand set away from the body. Short, leg kick stride with good balance. Good approach at the plate with a short swing path and extension thru contact. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively took drills at catcher and outfield. Behind the plate has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Comes out of crouch early in drills, gaining ground towards second. Popped 2.15-2.32 and threw 73 mph from the crouch. Threw 75 mph form the outfield. Will improve defensively with better footwork.

3. Sam Valona, OF/SS, West Allis Hale, 2017
5-foot-10, 155-pound, right-handed hitting OF/IF. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load to backside and a short toe tap stride. Good balance with a fast bat. Line drive hitter with a middle away approach and fluid rhythm. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.58. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top arm slot. Threw 76 mph from the outfield and 71 mph across the infield. Actions play better in the infield with average hands.

4. Nick Cramer, RHP/OF, Janesville Craig, 2017
Currently ranked No .41 in the Wisconsin Class of 2017. 6-foot, 160-pound, right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a lean, athletic frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Drop and drive delivery with a toe closed landing. Momentum falls to first base side on release. Regular effort with some rhythm. Fastball sat 79-80, topping out at 82 mph on his final pitch. Curveball showed 11-5 shape with late breaking action at 65-67 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup with cutting action at 70-72 mph. Offensively hits from a balanced, slightly open setup. Short stride over to even with good balance. Line drive hitter with a long swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.48. Defensively has a short, loose arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry. Plays thru the ball with fluid footwork and athletic actions. Threw 83 mph form the outfield.

Tony Becker, OF/RHP, Oconomowoc, 2018
6-foot-4, 175-pound, right-handed hitting OF/RHP with a lanky frame. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ arm action. Showed off raw arm strength throwing 84 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a deep load to the backside. Long, uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.48. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with an upright finish. Fastball sat 80-82 topping out at 83 mph. Slider showed short breaking action at 74-76 mph. Changeup sat 71-74 mph.

Jason Brewer, OF, Northland Pines, 2018
Lanky frame at 6-foot, 185-pounds. Right-handed hitting outfielder. At the plate hits from a narrow, crouched stance. Long stride with an uphill swing path. Flashed a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.32. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Accurate throws, threw 75 mph from the outfield. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork.

Jacob Charon, OF, St. Joseph Catholic, 2018
5-foot-11, 175-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a wrap load and short leg lift stride. Loopy, uphill swing path. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.48. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Slower actions with fluid footwork while playing thru the ball. Threw 72 mph from the outfield.

Collin Dorow, OF/RHP, Mukwonago, 2018
5-foot-8, 155-pound, right-handed hitting OF/RHP. At the plate hits from a wide base with a long toe tap stride. Lower half stays linear thru load and stride. Level swing path with some rhythm. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.01. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Hesitant fielder, with a quick exchange. Infield actions in the outfield. Threw 75 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, loose arm action. Drop and drive, online delivery with a toe closed landing. Uses a slide step from the stretch. Fastball flashed sink at 72-74 mph. Curveball showed 12-6 shape at 61-64 mph for strikes. Changeup showed fading action at 64-67 mph.

Dylan Karvala, RHP/OF, New Berlin Eisenhower, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound, right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a lanky, athletic frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, stiff arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a square landing and athletic finish. Some explosiveness in the core and hips. Fastball sat 71-81 topping out at 82 mph. Slider showed late sweeping action at 67-70 mph. Changeup was straight at 74-77 mph. Defensively has a short arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Hesitant actions. Threw 83 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a slightly open stance with a long stride and linear lower half. Long, level swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 87 mph exit velocity from a tee.

Josh Kolb, OF, Kettle Moraine, 2018
5-foot-11, 160-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder. At the plate hits from a tall setup with a back load and short stride. Long, uphill swing path with minimal lower half involvement. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.51. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ arm angle while playing thru the ball. Threw 73 mph from the outfield.
