Stock Report: 2015 LHP/1B Julian Alverio

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Wisconsin

Today’s Stock Report is on left handed two way player Julian Alverio. Alverio will be returning to the mound for the Eagles in 2013 and look to make an impact on both sides of the ball. We have recently seen Alverio at the Prospect Identification Showcase in January and ranked him as one of the top infielders and pitchers at the event.

Alverio is a big bodied, left handed two way player standing 6-foot-1, 210-pounds. On the mound his delivery stays tall and works downhill. His arm action shows regular effort operating from a high ¾ arm slot.

His fastball shows slight run at 76-78 mph, while his curveball has slurve action, lacking true action at times, if he can consistently keep it on an 11/5 plane he will see greater results. His changeup lacked deception as he slowed down his delivery, but he showed enough feel to prove that he can develop this pitch. At 68-69 mph he showed good separation from his fastball.

Offensively, he hits from the left side using an open stance with a smooth load and short stride. His bat path stays long through the baseball creating good extension, projecting him to be a gap to gap power hitter. He showed well above average exit velocity for his age recording 88 mph speeds from the tee.

Alverio will be an interesting prospect to watch over the next few years, as we track his development both on the mound and at the plate.
