Throwback Thursday: A Look Back At Wisconsin's First PBR Showcase

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

On a Throwback Thursday we take a look back at the first ever Wisconsin Showcase. Two years later this same event (Milwaukee Preseason I.D.) will be coming up on February 8 at Hitters Baseball Academy. In 2013 this event kicked off the Prep Baseball Report Wisconsin and has led to several of Wisconsin’s finest making college commitments and ranked amongst the top prospects in our coverage area. Over 30 players from this event went on to make college commitments and you can check out the roster HERE.

Here’s a look at the stat story from this event with the impressive list of numbers, as well as all the positional analysis from this event two years ago.

Don’t miss out on this year’s Milwaukee Preseason I.D. on February 8.

The Wisconsin Prospect Identification Showcase on Sunday January 27th brought a whole new crop of talent to the forefront, particularly in the younger classes.

The plethora of young talent was astounding as it seemed as though there were an assembly line of 6-foot and above young arms awaiting their bullpens. 6-foot-4 righty Ryan Selner (Milwaukee Lutheran, 2016) sat 80-82 mph, 6-foot-4 left hander Nathan Veloz (Oak Creek HS, 2015) was 83-84 mph, 6-foot-3 Ty Webber (Menomonee Falls HS, 2016) was in the low 80’s, 6-foot-3 Mitchel Makarewicz (Oak Creek HS, 2015) touches 85 mph, 6-foot-4 southpaw Nickolas Lackney (Whitefish Bay, 2015) sat 81-82 mph, and 6-foot-2 righty Dustin Landers (Kaukauna HS, 2015) tops out at 85 mph, just to name a few.

The outfield arm strength was incredible up and down the list from a number of sophomores and freshmen who lit up the radar gun. Highlighted by freshman Cyrillo Watson (South Milwaukee, 2016) who touched 90 mph, Doran Turchin (Oak Creek HS, 2015), Dominic Clementi (Arrowhead HS, 2016), Tucker Maris (Homestead HS, 2015), Parker Sniatynski (Marquette University HS, 2014), and Nickolas Lackney (Whitefish Bay, 2015) were all in the upper 80’s from the outfield.

On top of the projectable pitchers and athletic outfielders we also saw plenty of advanced infield actions, also highlighted by freshman. Justin Lavey (Tremper HS, 2016) and Gavin Lux (Indian Trail HS, 2016) both showed excellent hands in the field as well as sophomore Owen Miller (Ozaukee HS, 2015). The trio of infielders showed advanced defensive actions but were not alone as we saw a number of young defenders show their skills.
