Underclass Trials: Catcher Analysis

Today we start to roll out the player analysis from the Underclass Trials that took place on June 24th at The Rock in Franklin, WI. We kick off our analysis with catchers.

Garrett Gilbert takes the top spot throwing 74 mph from the crouch and popping 2.17-2.22. At the plate he hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with a short, uphill swing path. Strong thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity form a tee.

Garrett Gilbert, C, Westosha Central, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound athletic catcher. Offensively hits from right side with open and wide stance, short stride, good balance, quick bat speed, uphill path, line drive gap-to-gap type, and fluid rhythm. Exit velo 85 mph. Defensively the right-hander has long arm action from over-the-top, with some carry on ball. Showed soft hands, fluid footwork, and is athletic in the field. Threw 74 mph from crouch and pop times ranged 2.17-2.22. Ran 7.82 60.

5-foot-10, 173-pound catcher. Defensively the right hander has short arm action form high ¾, average strength, and average hands. Threw 67 mph from crouch. Pop times ranged 2.25-2.36. Offensively hits from right side with closed and balanced setup, loads back and drops, short stride, average balance, and takes uphill path. Exit velo 69 mph. Ran 8.22 60.

Ian Knuth, C/OF, Oconomowoc, 2019
5-foot-9, 140-pound catcher/outfielder. Offensively hits from right side with a balanced and tall setup, loads back, short stride, and good balance. Showed average bat speed, short and level path, and is line drive gap-to-gap type. Exit velo 79 mph. Defensively the right hander has short arm action from over-the-top, accurate, average hands, and average strength. Threw 74 mph from outfield and 67 mph from behind the plate. Pop times ranged from 2.28-2.33. Ran 7.38 60.

Sean Meyer, C, Oconomowoc, 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound catcher. Defensively the right hander has short arm action from high ¾, average strength, average hands, some accuracy, and a clean exchange. Threw 72 mph from behind the plate. Pop times ranged 2.19-2.26. Offensively hits from the right side with wide and balanced setup, loads back, short stride, good balance, takes uphill path and has fluid rhythm. Exit velo 71 mph. Ran 7.98 60.

Logan Rezash, C, Greendale, 2017
6-foot, 168-pound catcher. Defensively the right hander has short arm action, from over-the-top, accurate, has carry on ball, average hands and clean exchange. Threw 73 mph from crouch and pop times ranged 2.11-2.19. Offensively hits from right side with open and tall setup, no load, short stride, good balance, average bat speed, uphill path, and gap-to-gap type. Exit velo 77 mph. Ran 7.81 60.

Alec Spang, C, Union Grove, 2018
5-foot-9, 170-pound catcher. Defensively the right hander has short arm action from high ¾, some accuracy, average strength, and average hands. Threw 66 mph from crouch. Pop times ranged 2.25-2.36. Offensively hits from right side with narrow and closed setup, short stride, average balance, pull type, and takes long uphill path. Exit velo 80 mph. Ran 7.96 60.
