APPLETON, WI – Notre Dame rode a historic performance from Ty Yewman on the mound to advance to the Division 2 state championship with an 8-1 victory over River Valley in the semifinals.

Yewman made Fox Cities Stadium a no-fly zone in a complete game performance in which he struck out 17 Blackhawks.

The Tritons took an early lead thanks to an RBI triple by Noah Wleczyk in the top of the 1st. They added another in the top of the 2nd after Nick Martzahl doubled in a run.

Yewman retired the first 13 batters in order and took a perfect game into the 5th inning before Cole Mahoney became the Blackhawks’ first baserunner with a single to center.

Notre Dame scored two more runs in the top of the 6th in somewhat odd fashion. With runners on second and third, River Valley pitcher Lucas Price attempted a pickoff throw to second. However, there was nobody covering the bag, and the throw went into center field and allowed the runner on third to score. Sean Green dropped down a suicide squeeze a couple of pitches later to give the Tritons a 4-0 lead.

Yewman hit an RBI single and Gage Garrity hit an RBI double as part of a 4 run outburst in the Notre Dame half of the 7th that pushed the Tritons’ lead to 8-0.

River Valley finally put together their first rally of the game in the bottom of the 7th. Mahoney drove in a run to make the score 8-1, but that’s where it stayed for the remainder of the contest.

Yewman pitched a complete game three-hitter with 17 strikeouts and no walks. His strikeout total tied for the second most ever in a single state tournament game in Division 2.

Wleczyk finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with 2 extra base hits and an RBI for Notre Dame. Martzahl was also 2-for-2 for the Tritons with 2 RBIs. Mahoney finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for River Valley.

Notre Dame will face Milwaukee Lutheran in the Division 2 state championship game on Thursday at 3 PM. It is the second time that the Tritons have reached the title game in the last three years. In 2013 they were defeated by Lodi in the championship. Milwaukee Lutheran’s last appearance in the championship came in 2003, when they won the Division 2 title.
