Wisconsin 2016 Player Rankings Updated

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Illinois/Wisconsin

The 2016 is getting close to opening day and the senior class will be a heavy topic of conversation as it gets closer to the 2016 MLB draft. Last week the Prep Baseball Report released its updated 2016 Overall Rankings, a list of the top 400 prospects in our current 30-state coverage area. Wisconsin played a huge roll in that update, as five of the top seniors in the state cracked the top 100 overall.

RHP’s Nathan Brown (Arrowhead HS) and Alec Marsh (Reagan College Prep HS) continued to trend upward after good showings at this year’s Super 60. Both will be targets for pro scouts this spring once the WIAA season kicks off.

Today we begin our updates of Wisconsin’s state specific player rankings starting with the 2016 class. Mirroring what the overall rankings told us last week, Wisconsin is loaded with talent in a deep 2016 class. It was pretty much status quo at the top, as far as state specific rankings go, RHP Alec Marsh and OF Joe Acker saw slight bumps in the top ten. The top prospects continued to show why they are there this winter with very little shuffling going on in the top 50.

RANK NAME STATE SCHOOL CLASS POS COMMITMENT
1 Ben Rortvedt WI Verona Area 2016 C Arkansas
2 Gavin Lux WI Indian Trail 2016 SS Arizona State
3 Nathan Brown WI Arrowhead 2016 RHP Florida
4 Justin Lavey WI Tremper 2016 3B Louisville
5 Alec Marsh WI Reagan College Prep 2016 RHP Arizona State
6 Jack Eagan WI Wautoma 2016 LHP Indiana
7 Cyrillo Watson WI South Milwaukee 2016 OF Illinois
8 Joe Acker WI Marquette University 2016 OF Nebraska
9 Ryan Schmitt WI Arrowhead 2016 RHP Illinois
10 Matt McCarty WI South Milwaukee 2016 RHP Louisville

Several new name were added to the rankings, as we expanded from 115 to 125. Most notably is Gibraltar RHP Anthony Laughlin. Laughlin burst onto the scene at the Unsigned Senior Showcase in January with a mid-80’s fastball and a huge upside. Still uncommitted, Laughlin could be a hot commodity for recruiters this spring.

Another right-handed arm making moves this winter was Appleton North’s Mitchell Eady. We saw Eady make a velocity jump this winter touching 86 mph at a winter camp. The 6-foot-2, 165-pound righty soon after made a verbal commitment to Winona State in February.

More notable additions inside the top 100 include RHP Alexander Prickett (Cedarburg), RHP Garrett Hohn (Wausau West), 1B Ricky West (Homestead), SS Travis Styer (Brookfield East) and SS Alex Cimaroli (Wisconsin Dells).
