As we prepare for the upcoming 2014 high school season, we will be taking a preseason glimpse at programs from around the state.

Team: Independence
Nickname: Patriots
Class: 2A
League: Coalfield Conference
Head Coach: Scott Cuthbert
2013 Overall Record: 21-11 (Lost in state semifinals)
Returning Starters: 8

TOP PLAYERS:

Wyatt Adkins, SS, Class of 2014 (1st Team All-State 2013)
Jeremy McGinnis, C/RHP, Class of 2014 (2nd Team All-State 2013)
Brad Huffman, Utility/RHP, Class of 2014 (2nd Team All-Conference 2013)
Brian Sexton, RHP/1B, Class of 2014 (Honorable Mention All-State 2013)
Andrue Hughart, RHP/3B, Class of 2014 (Honorable Mention All-State 2013)

SEASON OUTLOOK:  

The Patriots lost a heartbraker to Herbert Hoover in the 2013 AA state semifinals on a walk-off home run. That memory, along with the return of eight starters, should be enough to motivate Independence for another potential run at a state title. Coach Scott Cuthbert likes his teams chances of a deep playoff run, as he should.

ACCORDING TO THE COACH:

"This year's team returns all players but one from a state semifinal performance. Last year's team only lost only three games in our classification. The one player that we lost (Drew D'Angelo) will be very tough to replace but this year's team should be very competitive in conference and regional play."
