Bridgeport Puts Together a Five Win Week

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

The Bridgeport Indians are the defending Class AA state champs and were the prohibitive favorite to repeat entering the 2015 camaign. After a relatively slow start due to weather issues, the Indians put together a five win week over the past seven days to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Wins over Lewis County (12-1), Byrd (7-4), East Fairmont (2-1), Brooke (3-2) and Preston (16-0) all took place in the span of six days. Although the Indians lost a total of eight seniors following a memorable 2014 run to a state title, they appear to have more than enough in reserve to make another deep run into the post season and are currently ranked No.1 in the PBR Elite Eight Class AA rankings.

Junior shortstop Dante Bonamico was named the Preseason AA Player of the Year in Region II and is ranked No. 3 in the WV Class of 2016. He is just one of four Indians currently ranked in the state's junior class giving Bridgeport depth that should continue into next season. Also ranked are LHP/OF Logan Smith (No. 11), RHP/OF Jared Cleghorn (No. 30) and RHP/OF Hunter Haddix (No. 33). Smith was the starting and winning pitcher as a sophomore in the 2014 state title game.

The upcoming week will be a challenge as Bridgeport is scheduled to play six more games including a weekend trip to the panhandle to play three games against Class AAA opponents. A deep roster that has seen nearly every player contribute will be tested, but the busy schedule should pay dividends when playoff time rolls around.
