Game Recaps: Class AA and AAA State Semifinal Action

Day two of the 2013 West Virginia state tournament saw a number of impressive pitching performances and a game dominated by the offenses in the night cap. Following is a brief recap of semifinal action from Friday.


Hurricane 3, Washington 1

J.T. RogoszewskiThe Redskins advanced to the state title game on the back of 2015 RHP J.T. Rogoszewski (right) who spun a complete game four hitter. Patriots' starter Jared Silva was nearly as impressive working five innings while allowing two runs and three hits.

Hurricane attempts to win a 3A State title when they battle Riverside tomorrow at 1:00pm. The Redskins are also attempting to go wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the PBR poll having started the season at No. 1.


Riverside 3, Wheeling Park 2

Pitching highlighted the 2nd Class 3A semifinal game as well. 2014 RHP Cameron Norris (right), a West Virginia State recruit, went the distance for the win giving up just three hits while striking out 10. 2015 RHP Michael Grove was just as impressive working 6 2/3 innings with three runs allowed on six hits while striking out eight.

The Patriots led 1-0 on a 2nd inning run that scored via a wild pitch until Riverside managed to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a 2-1 lead to the final frame. Wheeling Park answered with a two out RBI single from Nathan Hardman to tie the game 2-2.

Following back-to-back strikeouts to begin the bottom of the 7th Riverside got a single from Branden Hancock a double from Derrick Chestnut and a walk-off single from Trevor Smith to advance to today's title game opposite Hurricane.


Bridgeport 3, Chapmanville 1

Tyler SkidmoreThe dominant pitching from the Class 3A semifinals carried over to the first of two Class 2A semis with 2014 RHP Tyler Skidmore (right) going the distance for the win for the Indians. Skidmore allowed one run on six hits while striking out seven. 2014 LHP Brock Dalton was nearly as effective for Chapmanville yielding three runs in six innings of work. 

Dalton went 2-for-3 with his team's lone RBI to lead the Chapmanville offense. West Virginia Wesleyan recruit Greg Smith led the Bridgeport offense with two hits in four trips to the plate.

The Indians advance to the Class AA title game opposite Independence today at 4:00pm.


Independence 11, Fairmont 6

Andrue HughartThe final game of the semifinal round provided the most offensive fireworks of the day with the Patriots and Polar Bears combining for 17 runs and 21 hits. The Patriots used a five run 2nd inning and a four run 5th inning to advance to the Class AA title game.

Wyatt Adkins, Kevin Sexton, and Andrue Hughart (right), the first three hitters in the Patriots lineup, combined for nine hits and seven runs scored to fuel the Independence offense.

Austin Norman had two hits in four at bats to lead the Polar Bears.
