Game of the Day: Parkersburg South at University

University 2, Parkersburg South 1 (9 innings)

Coaches constantly preach throwing strikes, playing solid defense and getting timely hitting as a recipe for success on the high school baseball diamond. Those in attendance yesterday afternoon were treated to all of the above and then some as University and Parkersburg put on a clinic in how to play the game with the deciding run scoring in walkoff fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Parkersburg South junior right-hander Hunter DeLong and University senior left-hander Tyler Hart locked up in an epic pitcher's duel with both pitchers going the distance.

Both pitchers were on their games early working scoreless frames until Lucas Belt walked to lead off the bottom of the 5th inning for the Hawks, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two out single by Hart.

The Patriots answered right back on a single by lead-off hitter Todd Burner. Burner advanced on a stolen base and came home on a two-out single by Nick Wright to tie the game at one.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 9th inning when Jarret Kennedy led off with a triple. Following back-to-back intentional walks to load the bases, Ross Pallotta hit a sacrifice fly for the walkoff win scoring Kennedy from third base.

Ross MulhallHart went all nine innings for the win allowing just five hits while striking out 11 and walking none. DeLong was the hard luck loser working eight plus innings allowing just four hits while striking out six.

In addition to getting the final inning started and scoring the game winning run, Kennedy finished the night 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Ross Mulhall (right) accounted for the final University hit on the evening.
