Game of the Day: Elkins at Robert C. Byrd

tiger1a.gif (108×114)Elkins, No. 6 in the most recent Metro News AA Power Rankings, broke out the bats to defeat Robert C. Byrd.  The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board as an error, a wild pitch and a David Gainer sacrifice fly resulted in a 2-0 first inning lead.  Byrd responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  Four consecutive hits and a wild pitch did the damage. Tre Junkins doubled while Cole Kiddy (No. 10 in the current WV class of 2018 rankings and pictured below), Caden Wetzel and Gino Messenger all singled.

Elkins tied the score at 3-3 in the second on singles by Reed Schumaker and Luke Swecker followed by a Luke Petrice sacrifice fly.  Byrd retook the lead in the bottom half of the same inning using two walks and an error to move on top 4-3.  The Eagles extended the lead to 6-3 in the following inning on two Elkins fielding miscues and an RBI double by Caden Wetzel.Cole Kiddy

The Tigers broke things open in the top of the sixth scoring seven runs on seven hits. Petrice, Wetzel and Ben Huffman all doubled in the inning giving Elkins the final 11-6 margin of victory.  Huffman, Schumaker and Will Cromm all had multiple hit games for Elkins with Schumaker going 3-for-5.  Wetzel singled, doubled and drove in two for the Eagles.
