Sophomore Spotlight: LHP/1B Austin Cordell

Austin CordellThrowing at the varsity level as a sophomore can often be a trying experience for even the most talented of young prospects. Pikeview lefty Austin Cordell has gotten his proverbial feet wet this spring and has come out just fine. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound sophomore has gone 4-3 along the way with a 2.93 ERA in 10 total appearances totaling 41 innings. He has shown signs of the type of pitcher he is maturing into with 51 strikeouts and a batting average against of only .243.

Often times young pitchers have difficulties throwing strikes, especially in key situations, but Cordell has walked just 19 batters on the season. He has also shown the ability to go deep into ball games, throwing over 100 pitches on three occasions this spring.

Add in his .373 average at the plate, along with his 21 RBI, five doubles, three triples and a home run, and it is easy to see that Cordell is a prospect to watch in the Class of 2015.
