By Greg Williams

DeVaulRHP/3B Fletcher DeVaul has made a name for himself with a bat in his hands during his senior season at Fairmont Senior. During the regular season, the unsigned senior went 43 for 83, with 38 runs scored and 23 runs batted in, while only striking out just four times. On May 21 it was his right arm that took center stage.

DeVaul faced two batters over the minimum in leading the Polar Bears to an 11-0, mercy rule victory over Braxton County to secure a spot in the 2A Region I finals on May 24. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound unsigned senior struck out 10, and allowed just two hits in going the distance for the shutout.

DeVaul sat 84-86, while touching 87 several times. He polished off the final two hitters of the game with 87 and 85 mph fastballs respectively. DeVaul also commanded a 74-77 mph 1/5 breaking curveball that he used sparingly.

Fairmont Senior polished off Oak Glen 3-0 win the 2A Region I title, earning a trip to Charleston. With DeVaul and a stable of strong arms, the Polar Bears will attempt to ride pitching and timely hitting to a West Virginia Class AA state title.
