West Virginia Prospects Shine at Super 60 Pro Showcase

By Greg Williams
West Virginia Director of Scouting

Baseball is rarely played in blizzard conditions, but for two West Virginia prospects a winter storm dumping over a foot of snow on Chicago, IL was simply a road bump to a goal of attracting the attention of professional scouts. Dozens of area scouts and cross-checkers seated and standing at least six rows deep at the Super 60 Pro Showcase outside of Chicago made the outside weather conditions yesterday nothing more than an after thought.

Zach Minnick (Logan HS) began his day with a bang, turning in a very quick 6.85 60-yard dash, one of the top times run by a catcher at the event. The 6-foot, 215-pound Campbell University recruit went on to register a 95 mph bat exit velocity and showed some of his power potential with wood during two solid rounds of live batting practice. Minnick, ranked No. 1 in the WV Class of 2015, showed quick feet and a strong arm defensively, registering a top pop time of 1.90.

Michael Grove (Wheeling Park) showcased his power right arm sitting 88-89 while touching 90 several times during a very solid bullpen session. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound West Virginia University recruit flashed a solid 78 mph slider and a much improved 81 mph changeup. Grove, ranked No. 2 in the WV Class of 2015, impressed in spite of a recent hockey injury which resulted in a separation to his non-throwing shoulder.

Up next for residents of WV and PA is the Preseason All-State Showcase on February 14 (Infielders/Outfielders) and February 15 (Pitchers/Catchers) at Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA.
