Turang

LSU commit. 6'1, 165LB legitimate 3-tool player. Turang is an athletic, toolsy shortstop with a medium sized projectable frame ideal for the middle infield. Turang is an MLB everyday SS who exhibits quick twitch actions, smooth acrobatic defense abilities, and imagination at the end of his range. Has plus aptitude/feel for the game and possesses 2 plus tools that can't be taught, 65 speed & 60-arm strength. Turang has a professional offensive approach, squares the ball up on a consistent basis, and can manipulate the barrel with great hand-eye coordination. Turang sprays the ball to all fields, which lends itself to a high BA. Presently has 40 power and can hit HR's, but lacks overall strength in frame. His true power tool will come with age and body maturity. The silky swing plays now, and will always be aesthetic to the eye, but there are some concerns with the bat however, as he tends to bar-out his right arm in the load. Turang will have trouble squaring up wailing MLB inside fastballs, and exploding, bowling ball sliders if he doesn't make the adjustment. Turang has 65 speed, excellent first step quickness, gliding acceleration, and baseball instincts all around. Timed at 3.80 on a bunt & 4.03-4.19 consistently down the line is more than adequate speed.

7/10/17 - Named to Team USA 18U trials roster.

6/30/17 - Squared up a double to the opposite field, a fly ball over the left fielder’s head, which had an exit velocity of 96. He came home when the next batter, 2B Bobby Witt Jr. (Colleyville Heritage HS, TX) squared up a single through the middle. It came off the bat at 104.

6/27/17 - Showed patient at-bats all day, drawing two walks and squared up a 95 mph fastball from Ginn for a single over shortstop.

Widely considered the top prospect in the 2018 class, Turang can do it all. Listed at 6 feet, 150 pounds, he has quick-twitch actions and lean strength. The Louisiana State recruit has quick bat speed from the left side, plus speed and excellent bat-to-ball skills. His first strikeout of the season came after The Boras Classic—his 22nd game played in 2017. He was 7-for-16 in the tournament with  a double, triple, five RBIs and five runs scored. At shortstop, he is very athletic with easy actions, a quick exchange and strong arm.

4/21/17 - Went 2-for-4 with a bases clearing triple in the second inning. He later added an RBI single in the fourth, while also showing off his easy, athletic actions on defense throughout the game.

4/20/17 - Turang is arguably one of the best players in the country regardless of class. He went 2-for-4 with two singles and made several good defensive plays, showing off easy, quick actions and athleticism as he made a few strong throws on the move.

4/19/17 - Turang immediately jumped out. He smoothly caught throws from the outfield and whipped the ball around with his strong, loose arm while exhibiting quick feet and natural actions. His energy was infectious, and it was as if he knew that all eyes were on him, and he was there to give everyone a show. Every ground ball that he fielded, perfectly entered his mitt, and his throws looked like they would go through the first baseman, and were placed on target each time. There was no arrogance to the way he bounced back and forth, but rather pure joy that he and his Santiago teammates were going to be playing in the primetime game under the lights on the opponent’s (Mater Dei) field. Turang, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound twitchy-athlete would go 1-for-4 in the game, but his presence was immeasurable. The team fed off his energy, and he was a natural leader on the diamond. At shortstop, Turang made difficult plays look easy including a slow roller that he charged hard, and rounded ever so slightly in order to make a throw on the run. Santiago would come back to beat an excellent Mater Dei club, 8-4. Overall, Turang’s talent is undeniable. He has athleticism and quickness, soft hands, and a quick bat that works stronger through the zone than his frame lets on.

8/8/16 - Got one at-bat on Sunday, smoking a single back up the middle before promptly stealing second and third base. Though they play different positions, he reminds me of OF Mickey Moniak, the first overall pick in the 2016 draft, in that he has a high baseball IQ and always plays with high energy.

6/22/16 - Lean frame at 6 feet, 168 pounds and is committed to Louisiana State. He was 2-for-4 Wednesday with a walk and run scored. His first hit was against an 89-mph fastball and squared up over the shortstop’s head. He then took an inside-out swing and reached on an infield single on a jam shot, getting down the line in 4.1 seconds.

8/10/15 - Didn’t have much to speak of from game play, but he’s one of my favorite underclass prospects and his BP was impressive. He put a charge into several balls, showing off very good bat speed, and he has a ton of room to add strength.

8/9/15 - Plays hard, has tools and just wreaks havoc on pitchers. He showed a loose swing Sunday, going 1-for-2 with a hard single up the middle.
