4/16/22

Entering his Friday start against Illinois State, Beacon right-hander Colin Fields led the country in K/9 at 15.8. His KO pace slowed a bit against the Redbirds with just two in 5 IP, but he remains among the nation's individual leaders in strikeouts with 75 in 46 2/3 innings. Showing a shortened arm path from previous seasons, the strong-framed 6-foot-2, 200-pound Valpo ace thrives when he works north/south with his arsenal. Against the Redbirds he pitched at 89-90 mph and touched 92 with a mostly straight fastball. He seemed to work a little cautious with his heater early in the game, nibbling a bit much instead of challenging into what started the game as a tight strike zone. Fields also wasn't able to land his best pitch, a high-spin slider that sat in the 77-81 mph range. At its best it will spin around 3000 rpm, resulting in late bite and grades as a present average pro offering. He also showed a low-70s curveball that was more an early count strike stealer and a likely unintentional 87-88 cutter that was really his fastball thrown with an out of sync delivery. For the season Fields is now 4-1 with a 3.66 ERA in nine starts.
