5/22/21

Eligible for the five round 2020 draft, Richardson went undrafted after a torrid covid-shortened spring that produced a .424/.453/.797 slash. His high bonus demands went unmet and he returned to Bloomington where he has posted solid, but not spectacular numbers (.321/.398/.538) this spring. Richardson has well-rounded tools. His top one is above average raw power that he can get to in games (18 XBH this season). He does struggle with spin, especially left on left, but seldom misses his fastball like the one he bolted out to dead center for a home run during Saturday’s game against Nebraska. The left handed hitter is also very good at capitalizing on mistakes in the zone. At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds he runs and throws average, while patrolling center field with ease and the ability to cover some ground for above average range. Depending on his signability, he will likely be considered in the mid-to-late rounds on Day Two this July.

Building upon an All Big-Team Freshman season in 2019 where he slashed .264/.335/.491, Richardson opened last season on a white-hot tear. After 15 games he was leading the conference in home runs (5), runs scored (21) and slugging percentage (.797). A cerebral hitter, he’s worked hard to ensure that he maintains a level swing path, an approach that allows him to stay in the swing plane as long as possible and backspin the ball to all fields. Additionally, he’s worked at rotating in a confined space, cutting down on his drift and, ultimately, his empty swings. He’s shown good instincts in centerfield, getting good jumps off the bat and using his straight-line speed to run down balls in either gap. In observing Richardson’s progression year-over-year, he’s displayed increased strike zone awareness over the summer and fall. Apart from being one of the more naturally gifted athletes on the team, Head Coach Jeff Mercer has lauded Richardson for his work ethic and leadership qualities. Like Barr, he enters the fall as a late Day Two/early Day Three draft candidate, but could improve his stock with another high-level production spring.

2020 DRAFT: The soph-eligible center fielder is currently regarded by the scouting industry as the Hoosiers top prospect for 2020. A plus athlete with good speed, Richardson bats and throws left-handed. He belted nine home runs with a .264 average as a true freshman last spring and followed it up with a .424/.453/.797 with 5 HRs in 59 at-bats slash during the shortened 2020 season. He does have a tendency to strike out with a college career 31.2% K rate.

9/15/19: Sophomore eligible center fielder Grant Richardson is currently regarded by the scouting industry as the Hoosiers top prospect for 2020. A plus athlete with good speed, he struggled during the double-header as it looked like he wasn’t seeing the ball well; got jammed with a 76 mph changeup and made a late break on a short fly ball to center field which fell in for a base hit. Richardson who bats and throws left-handed, belted nine home runs with a .264 average as a true freshman last spring.

3/26/18

3/26/18 Spring Scout Blog: Ultra competitive and athletic senior started in the outfield and pitched 2 innings in relief, ended up getting the win on the bump in first outing in the new uniform. Looked more physical and stronger than last season, tighter wound lower half. Indiana commit finished 1-3 at the plate, with a 2 RBI single in the 3rd inning off good left handed arm. Had competitive at-bats, ran well down the line, plus arm from the OF. On the bump, struggled with command and feel in the first inning. Command was erratic before settling in in the second inning. Gave up 1 H, 2 ER, struck out 3 and walked 4 in 2 innings of work. Fastball was firm at 86-87, around the zone for majority of the night. Breaking ball was 73-74, threw a couple sharp downers to LHH for swing and misses, threw with good arm speed. Arm side changeup was 78.

8/02/15

8/2/15 FUTURE GAMES:  The 6-foot-2, 175 pound Richardson was a late addition to Team Indiana at this year's Future Games, but was easily one of the most impressive players on the roster.  He's a legitimate prospect both on the mound and at the plate, possessing tons of athleticism and quick-twitch.  On the mound the southpaw showcased a fastball up to 86 mph with quick arm speed from a long, loose high 3/4 arm action.  He flashed a few breaking balls at 72-73 showing depth and bite.  Offensively, the LHH possesses quick bat speed with barrel whip.  He's shown the ability to consistently get to extension producing hard hit line drives with projectable gap-to-gap power.  Off the tee he recorded a high exit velocity of 91 mph.  From the outfield he has plenty of arm strength, up to 91 mph, with athletic actions.  At the Future Games he ran a 6.85-60. Richardson is ranked No. 24 in the overall 2018 rankings.

2017 Spring Scout Blog:  The junior lefthander started on the mound and had an impressive outing against a good hitting lineup. The 6'2", 190 pound Indiana commit threw 6 innings of 1 hit baseball, only giving up 1 run on a solo homerun, and striking out 9 hitters. Delivery is polished, with hips and lower half working well down the mound, getting good extension out front. Small twist at the top, creates some deception and makes fastball jump on hitters. High 3/4 arm and arm swing are clean. Lot of twitch in the athletic body. Commanded both sides of the plate with the fastball having big arm side run to the outer half, getting lots of swing and misses. Fastball was 87-88, good downward action with some late life. Breaking ball was plus pitch at 74-76mph with late downward, wipeout action off the fastball plane. Played CF in the 7th inning and made a diving catch to save a run. Athletic two way prospect that has high ceiling in the 2018 class.

2/19/17: 6-foot-2, 186 pound outfielder, athletic/strong frame.  Offensively, the left-handed hitter hits from an athletic/crouch type setup, smooth load, leg kick timing trigger.  Good use over his lower half with balance throughout the swing.  Possesses quick hands to the baseball, gets to extension.  Good swing plane. Line drive hitter with gap power.  Showed lots of pop to his pull-side.  Quick bat speed.  Registered a high exit velocity of 88 mph.  Defensively, possesses athletic actions with soft hands, fluid feet, quick/clean exchange.  Long, high ¾ arm action with carry at 85 mph.  Ran a 6.88 in the laser timed 60 yard dash. Indiana commit.
