FB 88-91 (2100 rpm). Swing/miss CH 80-82 (1775-1900 rpm) with FB arm speed. Below average slider 81 mph.

6/15/20

After posting a 2-1 record with a 2.61 ERA in four starts for the Hoosiers this spring, the long bodied lefty worked in/out of traffic during his four scoreless innings on this look. His open landing and less than ideal arm action work to create above average deception in his delivery, giving his heater some late jump on the hitter. He features an 87-89 mph (T90) sinking fastball and a plus, low-80s changeup. He works his change-of-pace primarily to his arm side and at the knees. Sommers garners repeated swing/miss with the late sink as the pitch spins with good horizontal tilt in the 1650-1710 rpm range. His third pitch is a below average 73-74 mph curve which showed loose spin (1878-2055 rpm) and mostly backed up on this look. Although not a top round prospect, Sommer has the potential to become a front-of-the-rotation arm in the Big Ten and reminds me of former HoosierJoey Denatofor his pitchability.

2017 Spring Scout Blog:  6-foot-4, 185 pound left-hander continued to impress as he labored through a gauntlet of a lineup for 7 innings and 111 pitches of competitive baseball.  Sommer finished with 7 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 2 earned runs (3 total).  He too settled in very well after the second inning, finding his zone in the last 4 frames.  Fastball held at 84-87, bumping several 87's in the 7th inning.  Sharp command of the fastball.  Very clean upper body and arm swing.  Lower half is fluid, engages lower half early.  Lands closed at times, wraps around front foot.  IU signee.

IU signee.  6-foot-4, 185 pound No. 7 ranked southpaw pitched 5 innings with 5 strikeouts and 3 runs on 5 hits in game 1 of Sectional 8 versus North Central.  Smooth, easy delivery down the mound.  Firm front side, very repeatable.  Works at a quick pace with confidence.  Attacks hitters with predominately a 2-seam fastball sitting 83-85.  Late run, some down action towards his arm side.  4-seam fastball ranged between 84-87, touched 88.  At times, over rotates and pulls off to glove side.  Slider has sharpness with depth at 72-75.  Only threw a few change-ups but has arm side fade at 77-79mph.  Advanced feel for his position, high level athlete on the mound.  Sommer finished with 79 pitches, 55 strikes.  Expecting to see him again in some fashion on Monday for the Greyhounds.

3/28/17 Game Notes: The 6-foot-4 185 pound left-hander (IU signee) sat 85-87 with his fastball in the first two innings of his first start.  He finished with 6 strikeouts through 3 innings pitched.  Fastball held 84-86 through 3 innings.  Slider has late depth at 72-74.  Curveball has 1/7 shape at 70-71.  Uses the slider as an out pitch.  Arm action is loose, long.  Repeatable delivery with a slightly closed lower half.  Summer has advanced mound presence and feel for his stuff.

4/12/16 GAME NOTES:
Indiana commit was impressive despite the loss to Center Grove. In five innings of work struck out 10, walking none, and allowing five hitters to reach base. The southpaw effectively used his 6-4 frame to control the lower portion of the strike zone. Fastball was an easy 85-88 touching 89 multiple times. Has good rhythm in his delivery that he can repeat well. Breaking ball was 74-76 with depth. Changeup showed some arm side action.

FUTURE GAMES 2015:
A member of Team Indiana at this year's Future Games, Sommer is a projectable 6-foot-4, 185-pound southpaw with a fastball up to 85 mph. He shows advanced pitchability with easy effort. His fastball consistently sits in the 83-85 mph range, showing good arm side run and sink. His breaking ball continues to get better and better with each outing, sitting in the mid 70s with sharp, late action. Sommer possesses good balance and rhythm throughout his delivery

6/25/15: The 6-foot-4 185 pound left-handed pitcher sat 81-83 with the fastball.  Fastball has slight run and sink while thrown for strikes on both sides of the plate.  Slider was thrown at 72-74 with late break.  Good putaway pitch.  Change-up was thrown at 71-74 with good depth.  Delivery is smooth with good balance.  Arm action is long and loose.  Good mound presence and pounded the zone with different pitches.  High follow in 2017 class.

4/29/15:
Tommy, a 6’4 175 LHP, showcased plus pitch ability to go along with his easy effort on Wednesday night vs the undefeated Wildcats.   Tommy was constantly ahead of hitters (21 FPS). His FB has ASR and sink.  It is commanded well on his arm side.  He sat 82-83 for all 7 innings, touching 84 4 times and 85 once.   His breaking ball has developed since the last time I saw him.  It was thrown at 74-76mph with late break.  At times, he threw a loopier CB around 71-73.  His BB was thrown for a strike on both sides of the plate and as an out pitch.  Tommy’s CH was another solid pitch for him all night as he keeps arm speed and repeats delivery.  It was thrown at 72-75.  Tommy finished with 11K 6H 1ER in his 7IP.  His delivery is balanced and smooth throughout.  He finishes with off to 3B side but is under control.   It will be fun to watch his development the next few years.  High follow for 2017 class.

7/29/14:
6 foot 3 inches, 175 pounds, 7.92/60, Tall, lanky, LHP with a huge upside, Fastball is 78-80 mph and touches 82 mph from a ¾ slot.  His delivery is quick and easy. Sweeping slider is 68-70. He throws both pitches for strikes.  He is a good situational hitter that hits in a open stance with a short stride and fast bat speed.
