A 2015 OF with a 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame from Lafayette, LA. Exceptional athlete, 6.7 runner, with advanced instincts and tracking speed in the outfield. Left-handed hitter with a short compact stroke, present bat speed, hits to all fields, and displayed occasionally pop. Plays extremely hard, understands the game and the type of player he is.
3/23/19: Has been a very consistent college performer throughout his four-year career at LSU, however this season he is showing a big increase in power. During his first three seasons, over 825 at-bats, Duplantis hit a total of six home runs. This spring in just 86 at-bats he has five. Outside of the power surge, Duplantis looked nearly identical to the prospect reported on last February– "Good hand/eye with average bat speed. Well below average present power, but it should improve as he physically looks like a late bloomer. Ran a 4.21 down the line on a 6-3 groundout. Plus-plus runner underway. Sure-handed outfielder with below to well below average arm strength." As a college senior Duplantis should easily be selected in the top 10 rounds (likely 6-8) as a money saver senior sign. 7/5/18: Same type of prospect reported on this past February for the 2018 draft. Contact hitter. Good hand/eye with a compact swing and average bat speed. Well below average present power, but it should improve as he physically looks like a late bloomer. Ran a 4.21 down the line on a 6-3 groundout. Plus-plus runner underway. Sure-handed outfielder with below to well below average arm strength. Looked more comfortable with plus range in center field for LSU this spring than left field for the CNT. In his first game for the CNT against the USA 18U Trials team, Duplantis ran into the outfield fence while trying to catch a deep fly ball. Suffered an AC joint injury to his left shoulder and is likely out four-to-six weeks. Was replaced on the roster by his LSU teammate, Daniel Cabrera. (Seifert)
2/27/18: Played center field in place of injured Zach Watson. Was outstanding, showing plus plus range in all directions. Made an over the shoulder catch near the wall, as well a diving catch while running full speed towards the infield. He’s also a plus plus runner underway, as was seen during his triple to right field Saturday night. He lacks power and arm strength, both below average to well below average tools. He took consistent, quality at-bats showing average bat speed and good hand/eye. He’s a late bloomer and has the frame to hold more weight/strength which he will need to handle the wood bat in professional baseball. He profiles as an extra outfielder at the ML level. (Seifert)
