2022 MLB Draft: Locklear formed the second half of the most imposing power duo on the Cape last summer, providing protection for teammate Chase DeLauter out of the clean-up spot while tying DeLauter for the league lead in home runs (9) and finishing in the league's top ten in slugging (.504) and top five in ISO (.248). There's easy natural loft in his swing, but also some rigidity that can limit his barrel path and open up holes in his coverage zones. He's capable at third base and moves well enough to possibly handle an outfield corner rather than being relegated to first base or DH if a pro club moves him off of the hot corner. While there's first-round upside in the stick that produces elite level exit velocities, there may not be enough high-octane data amongs the Atlantic 10 arms for Locklear to be able to completely dispel some of the strikeout and coverage concerns that arose with his facing more high-end talent on the Cape.

In my final look at Orleans, Locklear took an 82 mph fastball over (yes, over) the tree line behind the left-field bullpen at Cotuit – estimated by the fancy machines behind home plate to be a 450-foot blast. There’s easy natural loft in his swing, but also some rigidity that can limit his barrel path and open up holes in his coverage zones – particularly on the inner-half. The result is a fair number of empty swings and strikeouts (24% K-rate this summer), even on balls over the white, to go with that light-tower power. Because his swing-and-miss derives more from coverage than approach issues, a side effect is shorter at-bats with higher in-zone miss rates, which depreciates supplemental offensive value he might otherwise generate with longer at-bats (including drawing more walks, which should come naturally if pitchers are forced to work around his pop – that’s what we saw this spring at VCU). He’s capable at third base and moves well enough to handle an outfield corner rather than being relegated to first base or DH if a pro club moves him off of the hot corner, which further boosts his value. The good news is Locklear’s heavy lifting is done from a draft stock perspective, as at present he projects as an early Day Two/top 75 selection. Physically imposing presence in the box. Hits from a comfortable well balanced, athletic stance. Quick knee-to-knee load with an average stride length. Creates really nice hand separation and maintains good balance throughout swing. Stays behind the ball well with a slightly uphill swing path. Quick hands and fast bat speed. Strong lower half involvement. Went 2-for-3 at the plate against Gilman, got hit once by the pitch, and scored a run. Major power present.

2019 3B Tyler Locklear looks to be developing into a top offensive option at the plate. Shows explosive bat speed at the plate and is freeing up the hand more using the whole field. Athletic at the corner and has been playing shortstop at times comfortably, although he better suits at third or a corner

Strong projectable physical frame at 6-foot-2, 210-pounds. Ran a 7.65 60-yard dash with a 1.9 10-yard split. Hits from a slightly open setup. Shorter swing path with ability to lift baseball and drive. Fast bat speed and very intriguing power potential and could be dangerous bat in middle on an order. Exit velocity of 96 mph. Solid actions in the field. Clean hands with exchange, not much wasted movements. Short arm action. Infield velocity of 75 mph.

Nice rhythm throughout swing. Athletic strong frame who looks to have nice power potential as he gets older. Short, direct path to the baseball with some extension through contact. Uses body well in swing and nice foundation to get better. Active feet in the infield. Sound actions and clean exchange. Throws across the diamond were accurate up to 78 mph.

Strong athletic frame. Hits from an athletic set up, short swing path, barrels up ball, quick bat speed. Gets in and out of the zone a little quickly at times, but interesting young prospect with strength

Good use of lower half.  Level path to the ball and uphill through contact. Shows plus power potential. Exit velo of 90 mph.  Active feet from 3B. Clean hands and exchange, fields out in front. Short arm action throwing from a low ¾ arm slot. Works thru the ball and throws across the diamond at 78 mph. Interesting 2019 to follow going forward.

Physical athletic specimen at 6-foot-2, 210-pounds. Hits from an athletic wider set up slgihtly open with weight back and hands in strong position. Short simple load to hitting position with double tap. Nice rhythm throughout. Strong hands at the plate with uphill finish through extension and fast bat speed at the plate. Power is present to pull side but should continue to develop into a middle of the order type stick. Exit velocity up to 97 mph. Has sound actions at third base, stays on balls of feet well with a confident first step. Shows ability to give depth at both corner positions and fill there witht he offensive potential as well.
