After spending his junior year at IMG Academy in Florida, Groome has decided to head back to his hometown school in New Jersey for his senior year.
3/23/15 - Vanderbilt commit. 6-foot-5, 200 pound lefty with a tall athletic projectable body with long loose arms and a strong lower half. Loose easy working arm with a high ¾ slot. Fluid delivery with good body control. Deep in back with a quiet head. Lands slightly across the body. Simple repeatable delivery. Very focused competitor. Fast ball was 91-95 mph with late life and good tilt. Gets good extension out front. Curve ball was mostly a downer but always broke 2 planes at 71-74 mph. Solid avg ML pitch. Very good mound presence Was in control the whole game. Threw a complete game, 1 hitter, shutout with 19 Ks. Could be a high 2016 draft.
2/4 - Vanderbilt commit 6-foot-5, 210 pound lefty with a tall, lean, athletic projectable body with long loose arms and a frame that will allow for plenty of added weight. Great pitchers body. He has good balance and an over-the-top arm slot with an easy working arm. Fluid delivery. FB has good tilt at 90-94 MPH. Curve ball has 12/6 rotation at 72-76 MPH with good depth. Has more depth with higher velocity. CHG has good fade with good arm speed at 75 MPH. Has a chance to have 3 future plus ML pitches. Against Clearwater he threw four shutout innings allowing no runs and striking out nine. Groome's frame, easy velocity, and ability to throw all three pitches for strikes should make him an intriguing draft prospect in 2016.
4/30/16 - The top draft prospect in the country, Groome is an intimidating force on the mound at 6-foot-5, 230-pounds. He has very fluid motions for the big guy, his whole windup is under control and quiet, with the ball jumping out of his hand at release. Huge lower half, proportional all the way up to his broad shoulders, and big gloves for hands. High ¾ arm angle. A no-doubt first rounder in this June’s MLB Draft, Groome certainly proved it on this day. Sat at 90-93 for the majority of the game, up to 94 a few times. Dropped to 89-92 in the later innings. Curveball had a sharp 11-5 break, clocking in at 77-78 for most of the day. Also showed good feel for a changeup at 78 MPH with armside fade. In his first start back from a 2 and a half week NJSIAA suspension due to NJ transfer rules. Finished with a CG 7 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 0 R, 13 K.
