May 2018
5-foot-10 middle infielder who stays short to the ball with quick hands and a repeatable motion; keeps bat on level path through the strike zone and drives the ball to all fields, gap power, makes consistent barrel contact. As a defender Smith demonstrattes smooth and agile footwork, above average range, sure glove, smooth and easy transfer with strong arm across the diamond.

NY Games (June 25-27, 2017)
Slight 5-foot-9, 150-pound frame, ran a 7.6/60 - was previously timed at 7.4. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation to drive ball to middle third of third of the field with an exit velocity of 84 MPH - down slightly from 89 MPH, repeatable motion, keeps bat on level plane with full extension after contact, lower body engagement will generate more consistent power. Defensively - agile, clean footwork with balanced approach to ball, smooth transfer with accurate arm at 79 MPH.
Preseason All-State (February 20th, 2017)

Smith checks in at 5-foot-9, 150 pounds. Had a 60 yard dash time of 7.52 seconds, but has previously been recorded at 7.4 seconds. Offensively- Begins with feet at shoulder width and knees slightly bent. Hands are aligned just above back shoulder with bat laid flat. Uses a small stride as hands load backwards quickly. Hands are on a short path to the ball. Swing plane is flat through his swing but hands stay tight to body throughout, limiting extension. Hips are rotational to initiate bat speed. Low, two handed finish with middle of the field line drive results. Had an exit velocity of 85 MPH off of the tee, but has previously been recorded as high as 89 MPH. Defensively- Approaches the ball with long, smooth steps; hangs back with glove side leg until last second, working through the ball. Fields ball in front of his body and takes hands right to throwing position. Uses a double shuffle towards target. Had throws of 77 MPH (+1 MPH) across the diamond with a traditional ¾ arm slot.Clean middle infield actions.
Last Chance Preview (October 30, 2016)

Smith, a 2018 right-handed hitting middle infielder/ RHP, currently ranked 5th in the state as a middle infielder, stands at 5-foot-9 and weighs a firm 148 pounds, ran a 7.40 60.
Offensively- Starts with a square lower half, knees slightly bent inward with weight centered while the hands are above and in front of the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat parallel to the ground. Gets to the launch phase of the swing with a lifting of the front foot, knee inward rotation, hands loaded straight back off the shoulder with a moderate shift of weight to the back leg. During batting practice showed a compact swing, driving the ball extremely well from the pull side gap to the opposite field gap. Shows good extension finishing with a two handed finish over the back shoulder. Simple compact movements making easy to keep the swing consistent along with the ability to recognize pitches well. Registered an impressive exit velocity of 89 MPH on the day. Defensively- Fluid athletic movements from before the pitch to the fielding of the ball. Uses a step hop prep step technique getting the body moving before the pitch. Field the ball out in front of the body off the left side using short choppy steps to create momentum towards the glove side. Moved extremely well, with an explosive first step to the glove side as well as the backhand side. Transfer is made from the chest using a thumbs down method keeping shorter arm action and keeping the lower half in sync with the upper half. Throws showed good carry and accuracy, registering an arm velocity of 76 MPH. Good looking prospect, that could play in the middle at the next level. Pitching- Starts from the first base side of the rubber with both hands held slightly above the waist. Gets to gathered position with a simple step towards the first base line while the pivot foot drags slightly more to the edge of the first base side of the rubber. At the balance position, the lead knee is rotated inward while the hands are chest height and a slight bend with the back knee, sticking the landing with the front toe directly towards the catcher, however gets pronounced arch with the back but is able to stay tight with the lead side. The fastball, thrown from an over the top arm angle, topped out at 75 MPH, showing some arm side run as well as plus downward tilt. Showed the ability to work the fastball to both sides of the plate and able to keep it in the lower third of the zone. Curveball showed tight break, more of a slurve action, staying in the lower portion of the strike zone on the outer half of the plate, with a top velocity of 68 MPH. The changeup, showed quality depth and rotation, as well as good differential from the fastball at 68 MPH.
