1.12.19
Cates has a strong, thick frame at 6-foot-1, 1230-pounds. The right-handed hitter can really accelerate the barrel through the zone with strength at contact and lift to finish. Showed gap power with a short path and top exit velocity of 95 mph. Behind the dish, he posted pop times of 2.0-2.19 with a top velocity from the crouch of 75 mph. Quick exchange, directional footwork, high exchange into a short, over the top arm swing.

09.23.17
6-foot, 200-pound, sturdy frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a balanced, slightly open, crouched stance. Early-smooth load back, then down into his legs with rhythm, walks away from his hands, landing into a strong launch position. Short path on ball in the middle of the plate, strong top hand, flat path, does a nice job of getting extension through contact. Line drive power currently, middle of the field approach during batting practice. Behind the plate, Cates a quick exchange with average hands and somewhat fluid footwork. Posted pop times of 2.07-2.18 to second base, hopping early into a staggered stance with inconsistent accuracy. Short arm stroke from a high-¾ slot with effort and a 73 mph velocity from the crouch.

The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a short arm stroke. Directional tall-and-fall delivery, level shoulders, late hand separation, lands square on his heel. His fastball ranged from 75-78 mph with slight arm side run. Slider ranges from 66-69 mph with 11/5 shape and some depth. His changeup flashed arm side fade at 68 mph with fastball arm speed.
