10.28.17 Payne has a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds, and will be a nice addition to a recruiting class with his ability to hit, pitch and play multiple positions. The right-handed hitter starts from a wide base with tilted shoulders and his hands sitting up in a relaxed position with bat cocked toward the pitcher. Smooth load back as he triggers his hands down and back, then strides forward, landing athletic. Aggressive hack with strong lower half transfer, short path into the zone, smooth swing with lots of lag in the barrel. Even though his exit velocity was only 84 mph at this event, the ball jumps off his bat as he whips the barrel through the zone with a loose finish, and more power to come. Positionally, Payne does a little bit of everything. On the infield, he has smooth footwork and soft hands that combined with his offensive ability, should allow him to fit in nicely at the next level. He has an accurate arm with a clean arm stroke and a top velocity of 86 mph across the diamond.
A two-way player and right-handed pitcher, Payne works from a high slot with an in-line, drop and drive delivery and athletic finish. The unsigned senior showed solid command in one inning of work. Straight fastball sat 81-82 mph. Threw his changeup with fastball arm speed at 74-75 mph, the pitch had heavy depth and fade. Threw his curveball for strike with gradual depth at 67-69 mph.
01.16.17 6-foot, 175-pound, long, lean, athletic frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with quick arm speed from back-to-front. Shows an athletic delivery with good lower half mobility. His fastball ranged from 82-83 mph with good tilt. He throws a sharp curveball 69-71 mph with 10-4 shape. His straight changeup ranges from 73-74 mph. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, slightly open, athletic stance with relaxed rhythm in his hands. He loads with an easy rock back with his hands that is followed by a knee-to-knee, low leg-kick, landing square with athleticism. Payne creates good leverage with an aggressive lower-half transfer and a short, whip-like bat path that drives the baseball from the middle-to-pull side. His barrell stays in the zone a long time and shows the ability to finish through contact. On the infield he has fluid footwork, soft hands and a clean exchange. He threw 86 mph across the diamond with a high-¾ release and shows the ability to play on the run. He registered an exit velocity of 81 mph and ran a 7.36 60-yard dash.
10.8.16
6-foot-2, 180-pound frame. Works from a high-¾ slot with a short reach at hand break. Fastball topped out at 83 mph and was heavy at the bottom of the zone. His changeup is his best offspeed pitch that he turns over with some good depth at 75 mph. Curveball has 12-6 action at 72 mph. Registered 86 mph three times from the outfield, 83 mph across the infield and ran a 7.25 60-yard dash.
