3/30/19

Texas Commit - Southard is a big, physical kid at 6-foot-2 and a solid 205-pounds. He is a quick tempo pitcher, showing athleticism during the traditional wind-up motion. He creates a sturdy foundation with his stout lower-half, making a smooth drive toward the plate, staying neutral on his line, and has an aggressive trunk and shoulder rotation to deliver the ball from a high-¾ arm slot. Southard puts every ounce of his strength to work in the production of his fastball. Showing both 4-seam and 2-seam variation, the pitch worked at 91-93, and topping at 95 mph in the first inning. The 2-seam had sharp arm-side running action. Southard scattered the fastball throughout the outing, but he forced a lot of swings, yielding only two walks and a single hit on the night. His velocity would eventually settle at the 90-92 range through the middle innings, and then down to 88-90 mph in the final two frames of his six-inning outing. He displayed two breaking balls, an 12/6 shape curveball and a 10/4 shape slider. The curveball, which worked at 76-78 was his best control pitch, which helped him to collect his 14 strikeouts on the evening. At its most effective moments, Southard dropped the pitch down to match his fastball release angle, adding to the deception of the pitch, and allowing it to have much sharper bite at the end. Slider had more lateral-flat shape at 82-84 with cutter action, but still shows glimpses of late depth. Southard is ranked

8.26.18
Southard has a strong 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame. The Texas commit works from a high slot with tilted shoulders. His fastball started out 88-90, topped out at 91 with scattered command, settled in at 86-88 from the stretch. Throws a 12/6 curveball at 75-77, and flashed a changeup at 82-85.

08.11.17
Underclass Area Code Games - 2019 RHP Jared Southard (Rouse HS, TX), a Texas commit, turned in one of the most impressive outings on the mound on day 2. Equipped with a thick, 6-foot-2, 205-pound, pitcher’s frame, Southard has a strong lower half that helped him sit 87-89 with his fastball. He utilized a methodical delivery before driving down the mound, peering over his front shoulder as he let his loose, strong arm work before delivering out of high ¾ slot. His 79 mph slider was a swing and miss pitch that showed tight spin with tilt, and was late-breaking out of the zone. The pitch shows promise as possible future plus-pitch, and will be a weapon moving forward. Southard creates a downward plane on the ball, and features a slight head snap out front.

06.26.17 - Texas recruit. 6-foot-2, 205-pound, strong frame. The right-hander works from a high slot with his fastball sitting 89-90 mph and a plus slider at 76 mph.

03.28.17 - Texas recruit. Southard is a big-framed sophomore at 6-2, 205-pounds, who is just now beginning to learn his way around the mound. His raw arm strength from a ¾ slot was impressive as he showed his heavy, tailing fastball that sat in the 85-88 mph range and topped out at 90. His curveball, which showed potential to be a plus pitch, has a deep 11-5 shape. Southard varied the velocity of his breaking ball from 73-77 mph, and it had later break with the extra speed. There were signs of a developing changeup that was clocked at 81-83.

6-foot-2, 200-pound strong, advanced frame. Works from high slot with his fastball ranging from 86-89 mph. Shows good feel for a solid changeup and curveball. The right-handed hitter has a solid swing with outstanding strength.
