1.12.19 It’s still early for pitcher, but 2020 LHP Mason Brandenberger (Clifton HS) has no trouble commanding four pitches for a strike. The left-hander has sharpened up his slider a bit since football season ended, now throwing that pitch at 72-73 mph with 2/8 shape. He still dotted up his fastball to both sides of the plate at 80-81 mph, and has elite feel for pitching. His curveball has 1/7 shape with good rotation and depth, while his change up was also quality at 72-73 mph. Brandenberger is one of our favorite arms in the ‘20 class because he can throw any pitch in any count, and whichever school pulls the trigger on him is going to be glad they got him. He plays multiple sports, while his competitiveness and presence also set him apart.
11.04.18 Brandenberger may only be 5-foot-10, 165-pounds, but he is tougher than a coffin nail, and has big league hair. The left-hander was the only arm to throw more than one inning and per usual, the junior carved. With one team down an arm because of a late cancellation, Mason volunteered to hurl an extra inning. He faced ten batters total, allowed only one hit, and pounded the zone with command and feel for three pitches. His fastball was 81-84 mph with slight arm side run. Throws his changeup with fastball arm speed and arm side fade at 71-73 mph. Flipped his curveball for a strike with 11/5 shape at 69-70 mph.
01.13.17 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame. We have seen Brandenberger pitch a ton in the past six months, and the left-hander simply continues to carve up hitters. His fastball still sat 81-83 mph with arm side run, and topping out at 86 mph. The breaking ball continues to be a solid pitch with good shape and depth at 68-70 mph, and he also mixes in a plus changeup at 77-78 mph with fastball arm speed. Pounds the strike zone, works quick, misses barrels.
10.28.17 Listed at 5-foot-10, 155-pounds, Brandenberger has been nails all fall, chewing up innings with plus feel for his for three pitches, all coming out of the same window with good arm speed. The left-hander works from a ¾ slot with a clean arm swing. He locates his fastball to both sides of the plate with pinpoint control at 80-82 mph. Spun his curveball with 2/8 shape and good depth at 68-70 mph. Shows the ability to add and subtract from this pitch, get-me-over early, then chase late. Only threw one changeup with fastball arm speed and arm side fade at 77 mph mph. Brandenberger works quick between pitches and has an “ice in his veins” demeanor as he can throw any pitch in any count. Look for his stock to continue to rise this spring during the high school season.
10.21.17 Brandenberger has been impressive all fall with his ability to make quick work of hitters with command of his fastball/curveball mix. His performance at the Underclass Games was just as stellar, except this time he showed off a 75-77 mph changeup that he throws with fastball arm speed and arm side depth. Standing 5-foot-10, 155-pounds, the left-hander works from a ¾ slot with a clean arm stroke. He shows plus pitchability with all three pitches coming from the same window with identical arm speed. He has pinpoint control of his fastball at 81-83 mph, and spins his curveball with 2/8 shape and depth at 70-71 mph. Brandenberger works quick between pitches and has an “ice in his veins” demeanor as he can throw any pitch in any count. Look for his stock to continue to rise this spring during the high school season.
09.10.17 5-foot-9, 150-pounds, lean, athletic frame. Brandenberger showed solid pitchability with good feel for both his fastball and curveball. He works from a ¾ slot with a loose arm swing and repeatable delivery. His fastball flashed arm side run with sink at 80-82 mph through the first two innings, dipping down to 78-80 mph in the third and fourth. His curveball has nice 2-8 shape with solid depth at 69-72 mph.
