VA/DC Scout Blog 4/5/18

Ryan continues to be an interesting projectable player. At the plate he hits from a slightly open set pu with hands at shoulder level. Its a quiet load with small leg lift to hitting position. A short path to the ball with extension and uphill finish. Creates fast bat speed at the plate. Would like to see more of a controlled aggression in his swing to promote more barrel control. Like the offensive potential for him as a gap to gap type hitter with occasional pop at higher level. The lanky athletic middle infielder has quick feet and hands defensively moving well from side to side. Takes advantage of his athleticism some, putting self in bad position trusting his hands to do work. Makes the tough plays look extremely easy. took a slow roller behind the mound and had life on the throw from a down under angle. Interesting prospect as Ryan still has plenty of ceiling left to reach. Could stay at short with his arm strength and athleticism, but could potentially move to outfield at the next level and his offensive projection would still fit nicely.

PBR Mid-Atlantic ProCase 2.10.18

Ryan has been one of the steadily improved players each year, continuing to get himself better and improve his stock. That was once again the case this year as the physicality and maturity of the Benedictine product is starting to come through. It looks as if he's had another growth spurt as well adding some length to his athletic 6-foot-2 frame. It's a short swing at the plate with fluidity and a nice ability to get the meat of his bat on the ball with his quick hands and barrel control. Defensively it was very smooth with fast hands and extremely quick exchange to release. On top of that was his arm strength at 87 mph. There were times his footwork could be better because he trusts his excellent hands to do the work. Seeing his frame now you know there is room to add on. Ryan continues to be high riser.

5.24.17: Incredibly athletic player with a lanky frame that he can still grow into. Actions at short are smooth, he fields with a wide base and quick soft hands, exchange is good and he throws with a short quick arm action and a strong arm. Good lateral range was on display in game, getting to ball two steps onto the second base side and rifling an off-balance throw on target with his body headed in the wrong direction. Still could use more consistency on the routine plays, but he has the athleticism to make plays few others can. At the plate, bat continues to develop but has potential, bat speed and strength were on display when he tripled to right, letting a ball get deep and just flicking his wrists to drive it into the corner.

2.11.17:  Ryan is 6-1 with an athletic frame, hits from the right side from a slightly open slightly crouched stance. Short stride on line and short load back with a bit of a wrap, good rhythm, good hips and some balance throughout swing. Short level path, quick bat with some extension through ball. Line drive hitter with projection for more power, exit velocity was 93, showed good approach. At short, good rhythm, fields with wide base, quick clean footwork and soft hands. Quick exchange, plays through ball well, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short, quick arm, infield velocity was 87. Ran a 4.43 home to first.

10.31.15:  Hit from a crouched stance that stood open.  Smooth load back with a stride that gets on line.  At times rushes to front side.  Average lower half turn that stays balanced.  Bat exit velocity of 80 mph.  Quick hands with a level approach to the ball.  Good extension.  Line drive hitter with gap power.  Threw from a loose, high ¾ arm slot with some accuracy.  Soft hands with athletic footwork that played through the ball.  Quick, clean exchanges.  Athletic player with smooth range.

2.15.15 Hit from a tall stance with flexed knees. Was loaded on the backside to start. Had a minimal load back that was smooth. Took a short stride that was on line and had balance throughout the swing. Was confident in his ability to hit and had rhythm to match. Had good hands with average bat speed (79 mph Exit Velocity). Took a short path to the ball with good extension. Line drive stroke that is gap-gap. Can really hit. In the field, threw from a ¾ arm slot with a long, loose arm action with accuracy. Had athletic actions and played through the ball. Has feel. Showed soft hands with fluid footwork and quick/clean exchanges. Showed average arm strength with a Positional Velocity of 75 mph.
