VA/DC Scout Blog 5/23/18
Ayers has an athletic frame and throws with easier effort than he has in the past. Fastball was 87-89 in the first two innings, touching 90 three times with late run that had a boring action to armside. Mostly held his velocity in the stretch, mixing slide step and leg lift, was 86-88. In the third, he tailed off to 84-87, which he held the rest of his outing. Slider was good as always, with late hard 10/4 break and good armspeed. Its break almost resembles a cutter that moves about 10 inches, no snap, it just goes. Pitch was 76-79 and he showed the ability to back door it and back foot it to righties. Pitch is outstanding when he buries it to glove side. Showed one change-up which had armspeed and fade to it. Fought his command during the game but did an admirable job of battling through the outing to give his team a chance to win.
7.15.17:  Ayers velocity in this start was 83-85 with his fastball. Change-up had sink and armspeed at 76-79. Slider was 77-81. Command was good, worked five innings, no walks, five hits with only two leaving the infield, six strikeouts.
5.31.17: Ayers was 85-86 early in the game, touching 87. Fastball had some plane and a bit of run. Velocity was the same in the stretch and wind. Velocity tailed off a bit later in the game, dropping to 82-84 in the fifth inning. Showed he could attack in and out with the fastball. Change-up had sink and good armspeed at 78. Good slider with tight, hard 2/8 break and good armspeed. Was able to bury pitch hard in on righty’s back knee for strikeouts. Command was good for most of the game, lost his feel for a few batters in the fourth, but was able to battle and minimize the damage. Got seven strikeouts in 18 batters faced.

3.26.17: Ayers has an athletic frame, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action and easy effort. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders closed and uphill, lands closed with athletic finish. Fastball was 82-85 with a bit of late run and some angle. Primarily threw fastballs, mixed in one change-up at 75 with good armspeed.

1.18.16: Ayers has an athletic frame and a decent arm action that generated some zip on his fastball, which ran 76-78.
