LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - No fewer than seven league championships will be decided this week in the Southern Section as we enter the last week of the regular season with an eye on the playoffs next week. In NorCal and San Diego, there are a couple of weeks of regular season play left that will decide close to a dozen league titles that will go a long way to determine playoff positioning.

The Top Five:

No changes in the Top Five of the Power 25. Corona remains No. 1 despite a loss to La Mirada in their fourth game of the week. The Panthers swept another league series and have clinched the BIG VIII title. Orange Lutheran remains at No. 2 after a sweep of then-ranked No. 19 Mater Dei. The Lancers sit atop the Trinity League one game ahead of Santa Margarita who own the tie-breaker should it come down to that. Harvard Westlake remains in the No. 3 spot thanks to another 3-0 league play week. The Wolverines will face off with Alemany this week in their final tune-up before the postseason. Granada (Livermore) remains in the No. 4 spot after a 2-0 week. The Matadors have two weeks left in their season against two teams in the bottom half of the East Bay League. At No. 5 is Valley Christian (San Jose) who has five league games left against bottom-half teams in the WCAL after winning four of their last five in league play.

Risers/Newcomers:

+ Santa Margarita continues to climb the rankings as the Eagles have won every Trinity League series they’ve played winning 2-of-3 every week of league play. If the Eagles sweep this week and Orange Lutheran loses one game, they’ll finish tied at the top with Santa Margarita holding the tie-breaker after winning that series.

+ La Mirada enters the Power 25 at No. 23 on the heels of a win over No. 1 Corona. The Matadores have played a brutally tough schedule outside of league and will have a chance to claim a league title this week with a three-game series against Gahr.

+ St. Mary’s (Stockton) facing one of the toughest schedules in Northern California, the Rams sit at 17-5 with a six game winning streak. With six games left in the regular season and three game lead in the Tri-City Athletic League, should the Rams win out they should lock up one of the top seeds in the postseason.

+ Paloma Valley checks into the Power 25 at No. 25 due to their 25-1 overall record. Their only loss was an extra-inning battle against a team in a higher division. The Wildcats will close out their regular season against rival Heritage with a chance to win another league championship.
