ATHX Performance/Calgary Bisons Scout Day Quick Hits

Cam Black-Araujo
Lead Scout, PBR Canada

Our staff was in Alberta last week for a trio of events with the Alberta New Year Open, as well as a pair of Scout Days in Edmonton and Calgary with ATHX Performance and the Calgary Bisons.

The two Scout Days gave our staff a look at over 80 players from both programs with several unsigned upperclassmen making a name for themselves and showing college stuff.

It wasn't just the older group that caught our attention as there were several 2026 and 2027 players who showed well and should be impact players from these teams for years to come.

Below, we bring you scouting notes and video on six standouts from both events, three from each program.

ATHX/Bisons Scout Day Quick Hits

Zac Foden RHP / OF / Bellerose Composite , AB / 2024

Foden was the most impressive arm at ATHX’s Scout Day with a quality combination of size and stuff. Stands at 6-foot-4, 200-pounds and the fastball sat 87-89mph with sink when working down in the zone. Foden works downhill and creates extension from an over-the-top arm slot. Works with a vertical, developing breaking ball at 71-73mph (2280rpm avg.) with shape. Also flashed a changeup at 78-80mph. Had his strength on display at the dish as well with a top exit velocity of 94.9mph. One of the top arms we saw during our three events in Alberta and has a chance to really jump on the scene throughout the course of the spring/summer.

Patrick MacInnis RHP / RHP / Vauxhall High School , AB / 2024

MacInnis had the best showing among arms at the Bisons Scout Day and immediately caught our attention with his uber-projectable, 6-foot-6, 200-pound frame. It’s a quick right-handed arm with clean arm-action, mechanics and medium-effort delivery. The fastball sat 86-88mph and there’s advanced feel for the breaking ball at 74-75mph with tight spin and shape. Also works with a developing changeup at 78-79mph with good horizontal break and fade. Intriguing unsigned 2024 who should garner plenty of attention from college coaches over the next year.

Luke Wheatley SS / RHP / Vauxhall , AB / 2024

Wheatley was no doubt one of the most athletic players we saw across all the events in Alberta and he stood out in every facet of his game. 6-foot-3, 180-pounds and moves well on the infield with quick feet and arm strength (81mph). Balanced and upright in the box from the right-side with quick hands through the zone and worked to the pullside throughout his round with a line-drive approach and top exit velocity of 88.5mph. Also showed well on the mound, sitting 83-84mph with the fastball. Wheatley has upside on both sides of the ball and will be an uncommitted 2024 to keep tabs on in Alberta.

Gabe Fink RHP / SS / Westmount Jr. High, AB / 2027

Fink jumped out immediately to our staff with his size and projectability at 6-foot, 150-pounds and is still just 13-years-old. The ball jumps out of his hand and the fastball sits 77-79mph with feel for the strike zone. Showed the ability to command both his offspeed pitches, a curveball at 66-68mph (2286rpm avg.) and changeup at 75mph. The bat is behind his stuff on the mound at the moment but still showed well with a left-handed swing that produced a top exit velocity of 80mph. Plenty of growing to come for Fink but no doubt advanced for his age.

Declan Wurz 3B / RHP / Strathmore High, AB / 2026

Wurz was another underclassmen who caught our attention and stands out with sheer size for his age at 6-foot-4, 180-pounds. Did his best work with the left-handed bat and it’s a clean swing with hands that are direct to the ball. Worked to the middle/pullside throughout his round with a top exit velocity of 82.6mph. Has a chance to be a real impact bat as he continues to fill out. Flashed potential on the mound, as well, as he continues to grow at the position. Overall game just lacks physicality right now as he’s still young but will only trend upwards as he adds strength and fills out.

Xavier Lampshire OF / 3B / Allendale Junior High, AB / 2027

Lampshire impressed at the dish during ATHX Scout Day with a clean, smooth swing from both sides of the dish. Another one of the youngest players we saw on the trip but showed advanced actions for his age. The bat is quick through the zone, especially from the right-side. The swing is short and direct to the ball and produced a top exit velocity of 80.4mph with a top distance of 257ft. Also has potential on the mound but stood out most with his work at the dish.
