Alberta Scout Blog: Unsigned Seniors

We take a look at 5 players in out senior class who made impressions with our staff over the last 8 weeks. All players have tools and upside to work with and should be on college coaches radars as we head into the indoor time here on the west coast.

Look for this group to make gains over the winter and we are excited to see them early in the new year and track the growth and development.

Tom Poole C / RHP / Calgary Christian, AB / 2021

Report: This Calgary Christian HS product has shown to be a versatile athlete at many places on the diamond.  Sporting an athletic 6-foot, 190-pound frame, along with a 6.90 60- yard dash, he has proven to be a quick dependable player behind the dish with a Pop time of 1.98-2.01 as a left-handed hitting catcher. This athleticism and strength has been on display on the mound and with the bat as well, with an exit velo of 92 mph and a fastball topping 85 with a clean, loose arm action. He is certainly a player with a lot of tools and very high upside. Poole has made the leap one province to the left and will be in BC with the Langley Blaze for the 2021 season.

Hunter Porter 1B / OF / Vauxhall , AB / 2021

Report: With an imposing 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame, this Vauxhall Academy player is a prototype for a power bat.  With an exit velo currently at 93 mph and an arm touching 86 mph from the outfield, there are plenty of exciting tools already present with Porter with a ton of potential. Whether its a corner outfield or at first base, this is going to be a hit first type of player and the strength is going to really play and help him tap into his power potential.

Archer Blumenschein RHP / 3B / NAX baseball academy/ABJ Catholic, AB / 2021

Report: At 6-foot-1,  200-pounds, Archer is strong and physically mature.  He has shown a heavy fastball topping at 85 mph to go along with two solid off-speed offerings that he commands well in the zone. At the plate, Archer has quick and smooth hands and shows strong gap to gap power.  Blumenschein keeps improving every time we see him and is a player with an exciting upside. Continue to watch this one as we head into the winter.

Chas Wheatley RHP / Strathcona, AB / 2021

Report: Towering at 6-foot-7, Wheatley has a body that projects very well off the mound.  His frame shows a lot of room for added mass making his fastball already topping at 88 mph even more impressive. He has a deceptive arm action, and releases the ball at a low ¾ arm slot which will be tough on hitters to pick up and jumps on them quickly.  The off-speed pitches continue to improve and show flashes. He has quickly become one of the most exciting players in this class.

Seth Thompson RHP / 1B / Ernest Manning, AB / 2021

Report:  Standing at an impressive 6-foot-4, 215-pounds, Thompson carries a very live arm.  Has shown a fastball at 84 with solid sink and efficient spin from a low ¾ slot. The off-speed offerings show great potential to become solid offerings down the road and a three-pitch mix.  Along with this prowess off the mound, Seth has shown respectable power potential with a 90 mph exit velo from the right side of the dish and the strength plays into the swing.
