Calgary Blues Scout Day: Quick Hits

Cam Black-Araujo
Assistant Director, PBR Canada

On Friday, May 12th, PBR Alberta hosted its fourth Scout Day of the year, this time pairing up with the Calgary Blues program. The Calgary Blues Scout Day gave us a look at 28 players in the organization with players ranging from the 2023 - 2026 classes.

Scout Days allow our staff to get an in-depth look at players within a program, while allowing organizations to get complete metrics, testing, video and profiles for all of their players. Scout Days also provide an opportunity for players within the organization who attend to be invited to our marquee events such as the Future and Junior Future Games (Atlanta), West Coast Games (Las Vegas) and the PBR Western Canada ProCase (BC).

All players at the Blues Scout Day ran through a pro-style workout which included a 60-yard dash, defensive evaluation and velocities from all positions, as well as batting practice for hitters and bullpens for the arms while recording exit velocities and pitch velocities.

Below, we continue our post-event coverage with scouting notes and video on five standouts from  the showcase.

CALGARY BLUES SCOUT DAY: QUICK HITS

Sheamus Ryan LHP / OF / All Saints , AB / 2024

Ryan was one of the better overall players at the Blues Scout Day. On the mound, he sat 82-84 with the FB that had plenty of arm side run to it. Pairing well with that fastball was his sweeping slider that came out of the same low ¾ arm slot. His changeup had lots of depth when located down in the zone which has the potential to be an effective swing & miss offering. At the dish, he swung with controlled aggression from the left side while maintaining a simple line drive approach. Ryan will be a 2024 to follow as the season continues.

Mitchell Finck SS / 2B / Central Memorial High School , AB / 2023

On the mound, Finck worked a 3-pitch mix. A loose, whippy arm out of a high ¾ slot that allowed him to generate depth on his curveball when located down in the zone. Touched 78 mph with the fastball and dropped in a changeup with run that he located well. With the bat, Finck utilized a toe tap and a short swing with some bat speed to get on time and drive the ball to all fields.

Jackson Trca SS / RHP / All Saints, AB / 2023

Trca was one of the more athletic players at the event and he proved that everywhere he played. On the infield, he showed off his smooth hands and quick feet which allowed him to get into a throwing position efficiently. When he got on the mound, he possessed a quick arm with short action and got up to 81 mph with the fastball. Flashed a curveball with depth that could create swing & miss when located effectively. At the dish, he generated bat speed with an approach of getting the ball in the air to all fields. Will be interesting to see how his athleticism translates to game action.

Devon Hagel C / 3B / Three Hills School, AB / 2023

Hagel showed well both behind the dish and at the plate at the Blues Scout Day. He had the top pop-time of the day, maxing out at 2.06, thanks to a quick transfer and accurate throws. At the dish, his right-handed swing is compact with bat speed. He uses a simple approach with a toe tap and stays back up the middle. Hagel will be an intriguing follow this season as he has the ability to be an impactful player on both sides of the ball.

Cole Mckinnon RHP / 2B / Dr. Ep Scarlett, AB / 2023

McKinnon had one of the better bullpens on Friday at the Calgary Blues Scout Day. He has a long, loose arm out of a high ¾ slot. Sat 81-82 mph with the fastball and topped out at 83 mph. He was able to locate all 3 of his offerings for strikes and when located down in the zone, his curveball showed lots of depth which will generate swing & miss. With a fastball that has lots of carry, his change up will be an effective offering as it has late running action. It will be interesting to see how McKinnon's repertoire plays in-game this summer.
