Uncommitted 2021 Spotlight: Maddux Mateychuk

Background: Mateychuk, a right-handed pitcher who is currently the #1 ranked prospect in Alberta’s 2020 class is an uncommitted arm with lots of upside. 6-foot-3, 220-pound, large-framed, physical build with thickness top to bottom. Current strength with room to become more muscular and become more athletic. Delivery is simplified, under control. Uses a long arm action, releases from a ¾ slot. Lands on-line towards the plate. Primarily attacks with his fastball, it’s been up to 93 mph, sits 89-92 mph, arm-side run. His secondary stuff is currently a work in progress, his changeup possesses similar movement to his fastball. Does not throw his curve much in-game, bigger, downward shape to it, lacks bite. Prone to wild spells. He is currently able to overpower competition with his fastball.

Outlook: Mateychuk is an exciting arm with one of the best fastballs in the country; he has a chance to take huge strides. There is arm quickness and strength, and he’ll have a chance to add more velo. He doesn’t yet have a put-away pitch at the next level, could develop one in the right program. Could benefit from a shorter arm action, strike-throwing ability should improve as a result. Should generate attention at the pro level as well as from colleges. Lots of risk, there is plenty of potential — profiles best as a reliever.
