Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Boaz Pirates kick off the season following a successful 2024 campaign that saw them make another Class 5A playoff appearance. With 20 wins last season and a solid core of returning players on both offense and defense, the Pirates are set for another promising year.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, the area championship remained up for grabs in a heated battle between arch-rivals Boaz and Sardis. Both teams had been ranked in the top 10 throughout the season, with Sardis holding a spot in the top three the entire way. However, the Pirates fell short in the series against Sardis, forcing them to hit the road for the first round of the playoffs. Facing Leeds on the road, Boaz saw its season come to an end with 3-1 and 10-1 losses, closing out the year with a 20-10 record. This spring, the Pirates return six positional starters and seven pitchers, positioning them for a stronger offensive season. Leading the way is standout RHP/SS Tyler Pierce (2025), a versatile multi-sport prospect coming off an exceptional junior campaign. On the mound, he posted a dominant 7-2 record with 101 strikeouts and a 0.92 ERA, while also hitting .337 with 10 doubles and 27 RBIs. Senior duo OF/RHP Elijah Kelley (2025) and 1B Major Kelley (2025) provide additional firepower, both returning with batting averages above .350. Meanwhile, 3B/RHP Bradyn Bennett (2026) is back after hitting .277 and recording a 3-1 record with a 1.96 ERA on the mound. Other key contributors include OF/RHP Landen Alexander (2025), who will play a vital role both in the outfield and on the mound, and INF Sage Bennett (2027), who impressed as a freshman last season at shortstop and is expected to take on a larger role at the plate. 1B Aden O'Rourke (2025) will also be a key offensive piece, while RHP Marshall Burns (2026) returns after a strong showing out of the bullpen in 2024, recording three saves and a 2.33 ERA. The Pirates will also rely on a promising group of underclassmen, including C Cooper Whorton (2027), C Mason Gaither (2027), LHP/OF Haagan Dodd (2027), and RHP/OF Landon Cannady (2027), all of whom are expected to step into key roles as they develop throughout the season.

With a strong core of returning talent and a promising group of underclassmen, the Boaz Pirates are poised for another competitive season in 2025. They'll compete in Class 5A, Area 13 against Crossville, Douglas, and Sardis for a spot in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. As they navigate another challenging schedule, Boaz will look to build on last season’s success and establish itself as a solid contender in Class 5A.
