We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.
Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.
Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. TEAM OUTLOOK
The Buckhorn Bucks have consistently been a strong contender in Class 6A, and they enter the 2025 season with a solid streak of playoff appearances in one of Alabama’s most competitive classifications. Following another playoff berth in 2024, the Bucks bring back a significant portion of last year’s team and are poised for another successful season in 2025.
The Bucks finished the 2024 season as the area champions, securing the title with a win over Hazel Green in their final area series, which earned them the opportunity to host a first-round playoff game. After a dominant win over Huffman in the opening round, the Bucks hosted the Oxford Yellow Jackets in the Sweet 16, one of the top teams in Class 6A last spring. Despite a strong season, the Bucks were eliminated in that series in two games, ending their campaign with a solid 20-14 record against tough competition. Heading into 2025, the team has high expectations as they aim for an even deeper playoff run. With 10 seniors on the roster, the Bucks bring plenty of experience, with many players having already played in the postseason. 3B/RHP Joshua Henson (Southeastern Louisiana, 2025) is one of the standout returners for the Bucks, having hit .372 with 5 home runs and 33 RBIs last season while also pitching 20 innings with a 3.76 ERA. OF/LHP Andrew Oelke (Calhoun CC, 2025) also established himself as a key two-way player, batting .380 with 3 home runs and 32 RBIs while compiling a 3.12 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 46 innings. These two seniors are expected to be leaders on both sides of the ball in 2025. Additional seniors, including C Tye Burress (2025), OF/RHP Isaac Sayle (2025), OF/LHP Kyler Campbell (Tennessee-Southern, 2025), and UTL/RHP Braden Abernathy (2025), will play vital roles offensively. All four hit over .300 last season, and their leadership will be key to the team’s success. On the mound, RHP Peyton Joiner (2025) will take on more innings after a strong junior season, where he recorded a 1.65 ERA over 30.1 innings. Along with the returning veterans, players like 1B Ethan Rushbrook (2025) and OF Myles Anglin (2025) will look to make an impact offensively, while LHP Baylor Simmons (2025) could give the pitching staff a boost after missing last season due to injury. Looking to the future, underclassmen such as 1B/LHP Braxton Tucker (2027), UTL Elijah Wentz (2027), C Taylor Walling (2028), and 1B/LHP Parker Turley (2028) are eager to compete for playing time and contribute to the team’s success in 2025.
Competing in a deep Class 6A field this spring, the certainly have a chance to emerge as one of the top teams and may be a team not many are talking enough about going into the season. They'll compete in Class 6A, Area 16 against Columbia, Hazel Green, Lee-Huntsville, and Mae Jemison for a spot in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. If the Bucks can stay healthy and perform consistently, they have the potential to make a serious run in the Class 6A playoffs in 2025.
