Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Orange Beach Makos made an impressive leap from the 2023 to 2024 season, improving their record from 11-19 to 31-10 and advancing to the 1st round of the Class 4A playoffs. One of the fastest-growing programs in Alabama, the Makos are primed for another strong showing in the spring of 2025.

Throughout their 2024 season, the Makos established themselves as one of the top teams in Class 4A, highlighted by a standout performance at the Prep Baseball South AL Showdown early in the season. Entering the playoffs with a 30-8 record, the Makos finished as runners-up in their area behind Bayside Academy. That set them up for a tough road trip to American Christian, where they were ultimately eliminated in a thrilling three-game series, ending their season with a 31-10 record. With most of the core returning in 2025, Coach Hoyle and his staff are eager about the future of the program. The team has once again built a challenging regular season schedule to prepare for both area competition and the playoffs. Several key returners will play pivotal roles this spring. C Colton Boyd (2027) has raised his profile significantly through preseason events, showing off his solid defensive skills and gap-to-gap power at the plate. As a multi-year starter, Boyd is already stepping into a leadership role as a sophomore. In addition to Boyd, seniors like SS Joel Chandler (Montevallo, 2025) and 1B Cooper Sanders (2025) have been consistent performers at the top of the lineup and are expected to have standout seasons. Other impactful upperclassmen include DH Austin Beck (2025), 3B/RHP Matthew Hoover (2026), OF/RHP Zane Rogers (2025), C/UTL Brayden Hood (2026), and INF Ward Hickman (2026), all of whom will play key roles. On the mound, RHP/OF Matthew Steele (Montevallo, 2025) is expected to lead the staff, with LHP Bryce McCollum (2025) and LHP Logan Kruse (2026) providing strong pitching depth. The team also has other arms to bolster the pitching staff throughout the season. Looking to the future, the Makos have a talented group of younger players ready to contribute. INF Connor Ford (2028), OF Tucker Peet (2027), and UTL Gentry Rogers (2027) all show a lot of promise and will compete for playing time in 2025.

With a talented roster that brings back plenty of valuable multi-year experience at the varsity level, the Makos are well-positioned for another successful season. They'll compete in Class 4A, Area 1 against Bayside Academy, Satsuma, and St. Michael Catholic for a spot in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Expect the Makos to take another quality step forward this spring with strong, competitive club in Class 4A.
