TEAM OUTLOOK
The Piedmont Bulldogs reeled off another successful 2024 campaign and captured their 13th consecutive area championship while amassing over 20 wins. A four-time Class 3A State Runner-up, the Bulldogs are hoping this will be the season where they are the last ones standing and hoisting the Class 3A Blue Map. They appear to once again have some key returners back, but will need some newer faces to step into bigger roles if they want to attain the type of success they want in 2025.
Last season, the Bulldogs continued to show why they were one of the top programs in Class 3A and were ranked inside the top-5 for the majority of the season. Playing some talented teams like Hewitt-Trussville, Alexandria, Russellville, and others during the regular season, Piedmont came into the playoffs as one of the main contenders to watch for and breezed past their first round playoff series against Sylvania. Facing off against a quality Fayette County squad, the Bulldogs were ultimately eliminated in the Sweet 16 by scores of 12-2 and 10-1 to close out their season with a 22-13 record. Looking to shift the page to 2025, their roster appears to bring back some notable returners on both sides of the ball, especially on the mound where they bring back 20/22 wins. Starting on the offensive side, C/RHP Kale Austin (2025) and 1B/LHP Cole Wilson (2025) are a pair of senior multi-year starters for the Bulldogs who are sure to make a big impact at the plate and on the mound. Austin brings back a .256 batting average with 7 2Bs, 1 HR, and 29 RBI and also went 3-0 on the mound with 28 Ks in 30 IP, while Wilson hit .262 in batting average with 4 2B and 19 RBI and went 5-0 on the mound with a 2.74 ERA. LHP Brodie Homesley (2025) is another three-year returning starter who has tossed some key innings for Piedmont over the last several years. The crafty southpaw was named to the Class 3A 1st Team All-State after posted a 6-4 record with 55 IP, 72 K, and a 2.84 ERA. Rounding it out, SS/RHP Cole Austin (2028) is an exciting young prospect in Alabama who was recently tabbed as the No. 5 prospect in the 2028 class in Alabama. Coming off a stellar eighth-grade season, the freshman will look to build off of 2024's campaign where he hit .333 in batting average and added 7 2Bs, 3 3Bs, 19 RBIs, and 13 SBs. On the mound, he threw in some important games and posted a 6-5 record with 49 Ks in 50 IP and compiled a 2.35 ERA in the process. Look for him to have another big season on both sides of the ball in 2025.
The Bulldogs are notoriously known for making deep playoff runs and being one of the top programs year in, and year out in Class 3A. This year appears to be no different, as they return several talented returners on both sides of the ball. They'll compete in Class 3A, Area 11 against Glencoe and Ohatchee for a spot in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Piedmont should once again be a team to watch at the end of the regular season and hope to be playing their best baseball down the stretch in 2025.
