2025 Prattville Lions Team Preview

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Prattville Lions enter the 2025 season with a strong core of offensive returners back on that side of the ball, with many of those players have multiple years of varsity experience and looking to lead the charge this spring. On the mound, there are three returning pitchers who saw time on the bump in 2024 with more newcomers looking to make an impact. Competing in the biggest classification in Alabama, the competition is as good as it gets, but the Lions have consistently shown they can compete with the best of the best year in and year out.

Coming off of three-consecutive playoff appearances in Class 7A, the Lions have consistently developed some next-level prospects within their program and this year looks to be the same with a talented mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen. Having made three-straight playoff appearances, the Lions were unfortunately eliminated in the 1st round in all three seasons, but are hoping this season they can take it a step further and potentially advance to the later rounds. Finishing as the runner-up in their area to Enterprise, Prattville traveled on the road to Central-Phenix City, the top-ranked team in Class 7A, in the 1st round of the playoffs and were eliminated in two games to close out their season with an 18-22 record. Turning the focus to the 2025 season, the Lions appear to be a strong offensive club with seven positional starters returning to this year's lineup. 3B/RHP Mason Piper (Wallace-Dothan CC, 2025) is a middle-of-the-order left-handed bat who led the team in ABs a season ago and hit .280 in batting average. Looking poised for an even bigger spring, the senior is also one of their key arms in the rotation with 49.2 IP last season and delivered a 7 IP shutout against Enterprise in an area series that helped punch their ticket to the playoffs. OF Dorsett Jackson (2026) and SS Aiden Urnis (New Orleans, 2026) are two key juniors who look ready to build off of strong sophomore campaigns at the plate. Jackson led the team batting average last season with a .330 clip, while Urnis, a former Future Gamer from this summer, played every game at shortstop and hit .280 in batting average. UTL Cavarous Ellis (2026) is an athletic, versatile player who can affect the game in a variety of way with his athleticism and should be a key contributor offensively this season. OF Christian Alexander (2027) and UTL Aiden Bradley (2028) are two more athletic players who can impact the game with their speed and are looking to make big impacts this spring. Alexander started playing at the varsity level at the mid-way point of the season last year and hit in the leadoff spot. C Nick Kramer (2027) is a well-rounded backstop who moves into the Lions program this spring, while INF/RHP Will McKay (2028) has a bright future within their program.

Looking to make it four-straight playoff appearances in Class 7A, the Lions appear to be a strong, competitive club once again this season. They'll compete in Class 7A, Area 5 against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, Thompson, and Tuscaloosa County for a spot in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. It's a loaded area filled with high-level programs, but the Lions are hoping they can be playing their best baseball down the stretch in 2025.
