2025 Saraland Spartans Team Preview

The 2025 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Saraland Spartans have become a dominant force in southern Alabama baseball, consistently ranking among the top programs regardless of classification. Last season was another strong campaign, highlighted by a Sweet 16 appearance. With Class 6A once again being the most competitive classification this spring, the Spartans are primed to be at the forefront in 2025.

Although the Spartans finished as area runners-up behind Faith Academy last year, they overcame the challenge in the first round, winning on the road against a tough Northridge team. After dropping Game 1 of the series 9-2 and trailing in Game 2 for much of the contest, Saraland battled back to win Games 2 and 3 with scores of 2-1 and 5-1, securing a spot in the Sweet 16. In the next round, a playoff rematch with Spanish Fort ended in a two-game sweep for the Toros, but the Spartans still finished the season with a strong 26-10 record. Looking ahead to 2025, the Spartans bring back a talented roster, particularly on the mound, which figures to be one of their greatest strengths. Key returners include OF Santae McWilliams (2025), C Hudson Robbins (2026), C Myles Davis (2025), SS Fuller Chisholm (2025), and INF John Abston (2025). McWilliams is a dynamic leadoff hitter with a .356 batting average and 32 stolen bases from last season. Robbins and Davis are both solid behind the plate and have improved during the offseason. Chisholm, who hit .310 in 2024, and Abston, who hit .357 despite missing much of last season due to injury, will anchor the middle of the infield and likely hit near the top of the order. Other players like OF Teran Senegal (2025), 3B/RHP Collin Smith (2025), and OF Jamison Roberts (2027) will compete for early playing time and significant roles. On the mound, RHP/1B Cooper Henson (2025) will lead the rotation after posting a 1.81 ERA last year. Additional pitching options include  RHP/OF Jacob Rowell (2026), RHP D'tric Butler (2026), RHP Gage Weaver (2025), RHP Jaxon Roberts (2025), RHP Cade Mason (2027), RHP Gabe Turner (2027), and RHP/SS Brody Jacobi (2027), all of whom have the potential to contribute at the varsity level and provide valuable depth.

The Spartans may have just three positional starters and three pitchers returning from last year's team, but the coaching staff feels like that's opened up the opportunity for the hungry, inexperienced players to come in and compete for those starting jobs in the early part of the season. They'll compete in Class 6A, Area 1 against Blount, Murphy, and Theodore for a spot in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Look for the Spartans to once again be a contender in Class 6A come playoff time in 2025.
