Huntsville Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Preseason ID was held on Wednesday, January 8th at Talley Performance in Huntsville, AL. This event was an open event that consisted of prospects from the 2025-2030 classes. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, ran the 30 yard dash using VALD Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Sunday.

Continuing our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look at some of the top performers from the showcase. Please continue to check back over the next week, as we will release other leaderboards and individual scouting reports on each player present at the event.

Tristan Blalock RHP / James Clemens, AL / 2029

Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 171-pounds. Long, high-waisted build with near limitless projection. Still plenty of room to add to his long-levered frame. In just a small sample size, the right-hander has already inserted himself into the conversation of being one of the top prospects in the young 2029 class in AL. A two-way prospect with obvious upside on the mound, Blalock was one of the youngest prospects in attendance, but threw the best bullpen of the night. Utilizing a long, loose arm swing, the right-hander possesses a quick right-handed arm that works on 3/4 arm slot to help create significant arm-side action. Sitting 84-87 mph and peaking at 87.4 mph, the fastball is obviously the best pitch in the arsenal right now, as it generates an average of 11.5 in. of horizontal movement and registered an average spin rate of 2274 RPM. While likely being able to dominate with the fastball at his age, the secondary offerings are still in development, but both show exciting promise. The breaking ball, sitting 65-68 mph, showcases true sweeping action with an average of -17.2 in. of horizontal movement and registered an average spin rate of 2248 RPM. The offering has tons of break and has the future potential of being a wipeout pitch if he contines to firm and refine it. Rounding it out the arsenal, the changeup, ranging 71-75 mph, showcases the same arm-side action as the fastball and was able to be landed consistently in the strike zone. Exciting, promising prospect who has the potential to be a future high-level arm in the state of Alabama

Bryce Zimmerman SS / Hazel Green, AL / 2026

Uncommitted. 5-foot-9, 177-pounds. Medium build with scattered strength. High-contact rate right-handed hitter who had one of the best rounds of BP from the event. Hits from an upright stance and is slightly-open. Utilizies a really short stride to get down on-time and is quick to contact with his right-handed barrel. Showcases a natural feel for it and finds the sweet spot more often than not. Has appeared to have added some muscle and showed off during his round of BP, recording his personal PB top EV of 94.5 mph. Continously drove firm line drives to the pull-side gap using a more compact and connected right-handed stroke. Averaged a 90.3 mph EV, best from the event, and recorded a max estimated distance of 341 ft., which was third-best from the event.

Mason Rinehart OF / Bob Jones, AL / 2025

Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 163-pounds. Lean, athletic build with room for added strength in the future. Possesses quality tools across the board with some athleticism and arm strength shown in prior events. In a strictly running and offensive look at this event, the uncommitted senior continued to show some intriguing offensive ability with a gap-to-gap approach from the right side of the plate. Hits from a balanced setup and uses a short, simple stride for timing. Hands drop the barrel to a more level plane through contact and shows some bat speed in the process. Consistent firm contact to the pull-side throughout his round of BP, posting a top EV of 95.0 mph and recording a max estimated distance of 347 ft., which was best from the event. Also recorded the top Edge Score from the event with a score of 85.25 and ran a 3.99 30-YD, second-best from the event.

Samuel Ryan Davis 1B / Buckhorn, AL / 2026

Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 218-pounds. Strong, physical build. Power-hitting right-handed hitter who looks to impact the baseball at a high-level and drive the ball to the pull-side gap with authority. Posted one of the top rounds of BP from the event and ranked near the top of most offensive statistical cateogries. Hits from an upright, narrow stance and utilizes a short, simple load while maintaining good balance throughout the swing. Barrel works on an upward path through contact with some present bat and hand bat speed. Power tool is the one that currently stands out, posting a top EV of 97.4 mph, which was the best from the event. Has a clean barrel through the zone and controls it fairly well with the ability to repeat his swing. Impressive physical right-handed hitter in the 2026 class in AL to follow this spring.
