AL HS Team Preview: Abbeville Christian Academy Generals

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Abbeville Christian Academy Generals will be the defending AISA Class A State Champions once the first pitch is throw this spring, and they'll be looking to replicate that same success from last year in 2023. After former head coach CJ Upshaw helped lead the Generals to their fifth state title in program history last spring, Cory Crawford takes over the program and will look to take them back to Montgomery after Upshaw took the pitching coach job at Wallace-Dothan CC.

The Generals will be in Class AA this spring and hope are high once again in Abbeville, AL. It was another historic season last year which ended in a dog-pile on the mound on Paterson Field in Montgomery, AL, but it was an extremely close series that ended up going three games with Jackson Academy. After the Generals dropped Game 1 by score of 4-3, they turned around won Game 2 by score of 7-4 to force a decisive winner-take-all Game 3. The Generals then went on to win that final game by score of 10-8, and held off a late-game rally to hoist the AISA Class A trophy. One of their biggest strengths on this year's team should be that they return a strong core of returning players who helped lead them to the state title. They will, however, look for some younger guys step up to contribute and provide depth playing at the varsity level in order for them to have the type of success that they want. OF/RHP Justin Murphy (2023) is one of those key pieces returning, as he will once again look to help lead the Generals both at the plate and on the mound. During his junior season, Murphy posted a .387 batting average offensively while going 7-3 on the mound with 46.2 innings pitched. 3B Connor Jones (2023) enjoyed an exceptional year at the plate during his junior season in 2022, and he'll look for an even bigger year this spring. The right-handed hitting infielder posted a .430 batting average last year, while also driving in 31 runs, as well. Rounding out a few of the top returning seniors for the Generals, SS/RHP Conner Hutto (2023) is another right-hander who returns for his final year of his high school career. Hutto also hit north of .300 mark in batting average, as he hit .301 last spring and is looking for another strong campaign.

Those are three big seniors that return for Abbeville Christian Academy this spring, but there are a couple more players who played an integral role on last year's team as underclassmen. C Reid Quincey (2024) will look to handle the catching duties defensively, and also provide the same type of offensive output he turned in a season ago. Quincey posted a .337 batting average and also drove in 33 runs as a sophomore in 2022. INF/RHP Titus McCreight (2025) also returns after doing more than just holding his own last spring playing as a freshman at the varsity level. McCreight is looking for an even bigger year this spring after hitting .327 and playing a key role on last year's team. The Generals will once again be a threat to win an AISA State Title this spring, and with how much they have coming back, they'll be a team to watch in 2023.
