PBR Alabama Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Madison County Tigers are fresh off another appearance in the Class 4A playoffs and will look to make it back once again in 2023 with a healthy amount of returners from last year's team. The Tigers will face a new area this spring, as they move to Area 13 that features New Hope, Randolph, St. John Paul II Catholic and Westminster Christian Academy.

The Tigers reached the 20-win mark in 2022 and finished as the Class 4A, Area 14 runner-ups behind North Jackson, and were tasked with traveling to play Curry in the 1st round of the playoffs. In that series, the Tigers handled the Yellow Jackets with relative ease by sweeping them with scores of 14-3 and 8-2 to advance to the 2nd round. They were ultimately defeated, however, in three games against Jacksonville by scores of 11-4, 2-12 and 4-5 to close their season at 20-14. Using seven positional starters and four pitchers who saw time last spring, they'll look to make it back to the playoffs and advance even further this spring. They'll need to find some depth on the mound, but should be a strong offensive club again. OF/RHP Andre Towers (2023) is one of the many multi-year starters coming back for another season for the Tigers. Towers is expected to hold down center field defensively during his senior season and will hit at the top of the order offensively using his athletic skill set.

OF Andre Towers (4/29/22)

C/RHP Nolan Daversa (Gadsden State CC signee, 2023) is a returning three-year starter for the Tigers that will play a two-way role this spring. Daversa will return to the heart of the order offensively and will look to provide power hitting from the right side while serving as a primary run-producer. During his junior season, Daversa hit .392 with 3 HR's and 24 RBI's offensively. He'll also be a quality arm that is expected to throw more innings on the mound.

C Nolan Daversa (5/30/22)

Coming off a junior season where he hit .387 in batting average, OF/RHP Ryan Caudle (2023) is looking for another strong senior season in 2023. Caudle is a solid athlete with speed and should play one of the corner outfield spots for the Tigers. INF/RHP Jake Thornton (2024) is coming off a sophomore season where he was one of the leaders both at the plate and on the mound. He'll look replicate that success this spring after tossing 58 IP with 59 K's to go along with a 2.14 ERA. At the plate, he also posted a .348 batting average with a HR and 28 RBI's. INF/RHP Nick Sharp (2024) is another returning junior who brings back two years of starting experience both at the plate and on the mound. Sharp is expected to be one the top pitchers in the rotation this spring and will hit towards the middle of the lineup and play multiple positions defensively.

INF Nick Sharp (7/31/20)

Two more upperclassmen who play big roles for the Tigers last spring are INF/RHP Chris Fearnside (2024) and OF/RHP Brody Moon (2024). Both are expected to see their roles increase this spring both at the plate and on the mound. INF/RHP Memphis Scott (2025) is coming off a breakout freshman campaign where he started on the infield and was one their primary run-producers offensively. Hitting the in the middle of the order last year, Scott hit .379 in batting average with 2 HR's and 26 RBI's and is looking for another strong season in 2023.

INF Memphis Scott (1/7/23)

Another young prospect to watch this spring will be INF Connor Drake (2026), who is a freshman and is expected to see time on the infield and play a role for the Tigers. Hopes are high once again this spring for Madison County, as they look to clinch a spot in the Class 4A playoffs once again and advance even deeper after making it to the 2nd round in 2022. Their offensive lineup looks to be one of their strengths, and seem to have enough pieces on the mound to be successful. Keep an eye out for the Tigers to be in the mix once again in 2023.
