Alabama Future Games Recap- Catchers

The Alabama Future Games team had 3 quality catchers on the roster and all three were impressive at the event. Playing in front of 300+ college coaches, the Alabama catchers showed well during the four day event at LakePoint. Let’s take a look at how each catcher performed. 

Grant Jay (2022, C/1B, Mobile Christian) A physical ‘22 backstop that really does a ton of things well. Offensively, he shows a very compact approach at the plate and showed a very solid middle of the field approach during BP. Really creates some backspin on the ball with some tilt in the swing path. Was 94 mph exit velocity off of a tee. The receiving skills are very solid and he presents a very quiet demeanor behind the plate with solid footwork. The transfer is quick and the throws have carry to the bag at 2B. A very nice physical ‘22 catcher. 

Ellis Yohn (2021, C/OF/RHP, Smiths Station) Behind the plate, Yohn has plenty of arm strength as he was 82 mph from behind the plate to the bag at 2B. With his quick transfer, this equated to very solid pop times at the event (1.94-2.07). Showing an athletic set up behind behind the dish, he did a very nice job on balls in the dirt and and also showed the ability to extend the plate for his pitchers. There is definite thunder in the hands at the plate and he does a nice job keeping the barrel through the hitting zone. Solid middle of the field approach with carry off the bat. Really hammered some balls during his AB’s in game play. He also stepped on the mound and showed the arm strength as well, with a FB that sat 86-88 mph and bumped 89 mph a few times. The breaking ball showed slider type action with tight spin. He did a nice job of establishing the FB down in the zone. Really versatile player in the ‘21 class. 

Tucker Stockman (2022, C/RHP, Athens) Another RHP/C combo, this one in the ‘22 class. Offensively, his toe tap approach allowed him to be on time with the barrel. He showed some pull side juice from a slightly tilted bat path. Does a nice job using his lower half in the swing. Really nice transfer behind the plate and the arm works now, and will only get stronger as he continues to develop. The pop times were consistently in the 2.0 range as he showed solid work with the feet. Balls in the dirt seemed “easy” for him and he showed quick recovery as well. On the mound, the FB really seemed to explode out of the hand. He did a nice job of creating some downward action on the FB, which sat 83-85 mph while bumping 86 mph a few times. The breaking ball was sharp and was a legit weapon vs. RH hitters. An interesting versatile ‘22 to follow.
