Alabama High School Team Preview: Jacksonville Golden Eagles

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The Golden Eagles were able to reach the 4A State Playoffs last spring before being eliminated by Curry in the 1st Round. In 2022, Jacksonville has high hopes of being able to go back to the playoffs and making a run thanks to five positional players returning from that 2021 squad.

Of those five returners, there are two seniors that stand out as key players to watch. C Juan "Tito" Canales fits the mold of what you want as a catcher. He's one of the few team leaders that the Golden Eagles will depend on. He's a 6-0, 185-pounder with solid skills defensively behind the plate. SS Jae-Taj Morris is a speedy infielder with decent pop and uses his athleticism well in his offensive profile. Those two, in addition to a few more, are some upperclassmen who will be asked to lead the way in 2022. 3B Ryan Mitchell is an up-and-coming sophomore who has some potential to have a successful high school career. He'll also be asked to throw some meaningful innings on the mound, as well. With a solid mixture of upperclassmen and underclassmen, the Golden Eagles will look to get back to the 4A State Playoffs in 2022.
