Alabama High School Team Preview: Childersburg Tigers

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

The 3A Tigers will look to five returning starters to lead the way in 2021 while depending on some young players, especially pitchers, to take valuable roles. Those 5 returners should definitely lead by example this year. A senior, 3B Jordon Fomby is a physical (6'0 225 lbs.) infielder that should have plenty of opportunities to drive in runs this year. He will also be a leader for the Tigers. Junior SS Canaan Johnson returns for 2021 to his usual spot and will be called on to be a consistent bat in the lineup.  Johnson shows some nice defensive actions on the dirt. A slew of sophomores will make up a majority of the rest of the team. One of those is 2B Lane Dennis. The 5'10 175 pounder shows solid fundamnetal astions in all facets of his game and is also a good runner. 1B/OF Kane Smith is another returner that started as a freshman and can help in a number of ways on the diamond. Smith will be coounted on to produce offensively from the left side at the plate. Some additional young players will be counted on this year for the varsity Tigers. One of those is sophomore MIF/OF Jordan Mann. Mann shows some nice speed on the field and a very short, compact approach at the plate. Catcher JD Oakes is another sophomore that is primed to be a valuable member of the 2021 team. Oakes will be charged with handling a young pitching staff from behind the plate. Isaac Marbury is a sophomore 1B that shows a ton of potential. The 6'3 210 pounder can handle the bat very well and also moves well in the field. The 5 returners will lead the team in 2021 but will also depend on some youngsters to fill some important roles.
